I’ve only been around the boards for a week or so but everyone has been so helpful and I’ve really enjoyed reading everyone’s stories. I have a situation I could really use some advice on.
My boyfriend and I moved in August to a new city about 40 minutes away from Boston, where we met and used to live. We moved so he could start graduate school this past fall. It’s been a huge adjustment for both of us. We’re used to being able to walk everywhere, have things to do all the time and spend more time with friends than we do now. We both feel the same way but because he has school here, it seems a little less of an adjustment for him. We’ve agreed that I get to choose where we live once he graduates and he’s even said that he would support me once he graduates and gets a job so I can pursue my passions. In the meantime, I need a hobby.
I would like to meet more people but that’s not necessarily a mandatory requirement for the hobby. It just has to keep me busy and make me feel accomplished. I have a short list of things I would like to purse but I’m curious if any of you ladies have any other ideas I haven’t thought of. I like all the domestic things like cooking, baking, canning and so on.
Anything coming to mind?

You should look and see if there are any “Iron Chef” type competitions in your area. Sometimes groups will pick a secret ingredient, and everyone brings a dish made with that ingredient and tries/judges each other’s. Could be a fun way to meet folks!

@Melissaah: What about a cake decorating class. It might come in handy?

I suggested this on another thread but it works here too. Check out your local community college for “hobby” classes. There are cooking, dancing, photography, scrapbooking, etc…almost anything you can think of.

I really enjoy couponing.. haha not crazy extreme couponing, but I think it’s a fun hobby and you save money. I also stock up on things I can get for free and donate them around the holidays. I know some of my other friends are on couponing forums online and host coupon trading parties and stuff with others in their areas. This seems kinda domestic, so maybe you’d enjoy it! or you might just think I’m nutso.. haha oh well 😛
I don’t know if you’re into working out (I’m not really actually..) but I started doing group fitness classes at my gym and I actually really like some and think they are fun! And it’s a group atmosphere so you get to meet people too.

@tksjewelry: agreed. This is a great way to meet people, plus pick up a new hobby.
If there’s a local organization you’re interested, volunteering’s a great way to meet ppl who share your interests.
