I don't know anything about sports, so don't think I'll be much help - but maybe you can have the sports teams on one side and pictures of the two of you on the other side. Not related, but at least it's cute? good luck!
Ooooo 22 tables requires way too much brain power for me! (But I love yours, too, Mrs Hamster!)
If you wanted to do Mrs. Eggplant's, I think it'd be really easy because you don't need props per se beyond the posterboard. Your photog could help coming up with the cute different poses, too.
For a more sports related one, to be more interesting than just framing the team name, what if you used their actual logos and then cut them out in the shape of the logo, backed them with cardstock in your colors, and used standing clips instead of frames?
I have taken it upon myself to make this extremely elaborate mock-up for you in Paint:

It may be too casual for what you're doing, but it would definitely add visual interest!
You can have sports team jerseys as the table numbers. If you get a shot of you wearing a jersey, you could photoshop the different jerseys.
@DeaconBride: I was trying to figure a way to incorporate that, too, but that's such a cool idea!
You wouldn't have to go in 1-22 order, just go from smallest jersey number to largest!
Your fiance likes 22 sports teams--wow! That's a lot, I'm impressed. :) What about using other sports terms for the tables . . . some of them even have numbers in the name: hole in one, double play, final four, three peat, sweet sixteen . . .
More: home run, over time, tiebreaker, winning streak . . .

My FI is a huge sports fan so I decided that for the reception, we can have our escort cards in the shape of tickets (like someone going to a bball game) and the table names will be sports teams he likes. Now, I am trying to come up with a way to put those names on the tables instead of just printing the name of the team and framing them. I loved Mrs. Hamster's (love love love, but don't know how many stories I can write about sports teams I don't know) and Mrs. Eggplant's (easier to do but I will have to either cut the board or write out names). It's just that our engagment shoot will be in Houston (we live in NYC) and it's hard to think of the kind of props I'm going to take with my from here over there. It doesn't help that the shoot takes place within hours of us landing. Anyhow, if these ideas don't work, any other ideas you guys can help me with? Our wedding is biggish...22 tables and counting!!! Thanks ladies....
