Hum... interesting. I don't know who this designer is, but beware! This may not be the case with this shop, but I tried on dresses at a shop that refused to tell me the designers name... turns out they were knock offs. I'm not bridal snob, it would have been fine if I loved a dress that was a knock off but the problem was they were representing it and pricing it as a designer gown. Moves like this make me kinda suspicious. Good luck Bee!
That's really weird that she won't tell you the designer. How can you make an informed decision?! I'd proceed with caution, there's no real reason why she shouldn't let you know, unless she's trying to hide the price from you or something. If you really want to figure it out- maybe you can look at the designers that the bridal salon carries and narrow it down from there? If they carry big name designers, they often have several seasons listed on their websites. Also, marthastewartweddings.com has a ton of designers with multiple seasons listed so maybe you can find it there. Good luck!! :)
Where could I find out which designers the shop carries? They don't have a website... The shop has been in business for decades and is Best of the Knot, among other awards, so I don't think they are sketchy, they just want me to buy the dress there and not somewhere else. I just want to make sure that I am getting a good deal, so I'd like to comparison shop if I can. (I guess that I am doing just what they don't want me to do, but...)
Hmm, they don't even have a basic website? What are they called and where are they located? It seems strange- every salon I've been to advertises based on who they carry. Did she tell you if it was this season or from a past season? You can try searching on marthastewartweddings.com based on the silhouette of the dress (a-line, sheath, ball gown etc.). I think you can search on theknot.com or projectwedding.com based on silhouette too, and maybe even neckline if you remember the details of the dress.
seriously from what i have heard you shouldnt realy trust bridal stores that refuse to tell you the name of the designers. arent there any other stores in your area? If you took pictures of the dress that will make it easier to identify
It's Gigi's Closette in Glenview, IL (a suburb of Chicago). I have no idea which season or year it is from, but I was assured that they could order it in my size, color choice, etc., so it's not like it's discontinued or old.
I have found lots of dresses that look similar on the sites that were recommended, but not THE dress. I was allowed to take pictures. Would that help in pinpointing the designer? I just thought that someone might know who was smart enough to include several sets of zippers in the samples, making it easier for me to find the actual dress.
Thank you all for help in this mystery!
You know, this is one of the most annoying things I've ever heard of. Why are bridal shops allowed to get away without letting you know the designer of the product they're selling???? It shouldn't be allowed. I mean really... If you buy china, crystal, rings, shoes, cars...anything...if you ask who makes it the seller is obligated to tell you. They can't just say, I'll only tell you if you buy it from me. Sheesh!
Post the picture! That would really help!
Can you post your pictures?
Frankly, I would straight up tell the salesperson that you don't want to spend your money in a place that believes you to be a thief because you want to be informed before you make an important purchase. I'm sure you could find another dress that you love even more in a shop that tells you the designer.
Hmm you're right- no real website. It's odd too that in the reviews no one even mentions the name of the designer whose dress they bought. Haven't heard about that zipper thing but you can try posting it! I know I feel like I've been staring at wedding dresses for the last 6 months and have gotten somewhat good at guessing designers :P
That kind of business practices really upset me... Just for that, I would find out who the designer of my dress is and buy it somewhere else. They're holding potential customer hostages by not telling them everything about the product, thus forcing them into buying in their store. That does not sit well with me.
Try Jasmine bridal. I used to own a bridal shop and Jasmine was the only one doing what you're describing out of the dresses I had. Good luck! And yes, post pictures if you have any. That'd help!
The Jasmine Bridal website lists Gigi's on their site as a location! Check it out!!!
It has to be Jasmine! I just found this on their website:
TailorMaid is an original system that allows a single dress to fit all sizes 4 – 28. Not only will you be able to see just what your dress will look like on you, but you will also get a better fit on the dress you order. Your retailer will be able to show you the difference between two or more sizes with a single zip, so you can make the decision on whether you want your gown more snug or loose – by actually being able to feel the difference! A good impression of what the gown will actually look like; a better fitting dress when it comes in; less time spent choosing a size and making alterations – that’s what you get with Jasmine’s TailorMaid system.
That exactly describes the numerous zippers that were in my dress.
I don't see the exact one that I tried on on their website and am waiting for the friend who went with me to send pictures. (No one has the sense of urgency about a bride's wedding other than the bride herself...) As soon as I have the picture, I'll post it. Hopefully someone will know how to find an exact dress based on the photo.
Thanks for all of your help so far. I feel like I am SO much closer to finding out about my dress.
That shop sounds shady...I agree with PPs that there's no reasonable explanation as to why she wouldn't disclose that information to you.
I finally got pictures! Hopefully this will help all of the experts out there be able to help me figure out the designer and style number. Thank you all in advance!

I just tried on wedding gowns today (first time in a real, non-sample, non-consignment shop) and found a dress that I love. The saleswoman refuses to release the name of the designer until I buy the dress. Does anyone know which designer puts zippers of multiple sizes in the sample dresses? I tried on several by the same designer (according to the saleswoman), which all had multiple zipper sizes sewn into the dress (in addition to the normal dress zipper). I would love to be able to price compare. Any ideas?
