I am wondering if anyone has any tricks they use that make doing housework more enjoyable. I really don’t like to do housework (does anyone really?!) and neither does my SO. I know you can’t change other people so instead of continuing to “nag” my SO to help with the housework (which usually expels more energy than it takes for me to do the darn thing myself!), I’m going to try to make it more fun for me so that I can get it done with a smile on my face. I want to get a handle on this housework thing before we have children and there is even more work to be done! Thanks in advance for the advice 🙂

I listen to something fun while I do it, and I tend (wisely or unwisely) to cram it all into mega 2hr long cleaning sessions every couple weeks, and just do quickie maintenance in between that. If I”m doing something stationary like folding laundry, I let myself watch a girly tv show that Darling Husband wouldn’t want to see; it’s the only time I do that, so it makes laundry fun. Or, for everything other than vaccuuming, I listen to talk radio, call a friend, or turn on pandora to make it more interesting. Sometimes I’ll promise myself something like, “if I can finish this in an hour, I’ll have 30 minutes to sit outside and read before I need to start dinner.” That always provides good motivation.
That gets me through it, and makes it okay, especially since I do all of it. Darling Husband works like crazy, while I work p/t from home, so cooking, housekeeping, etc is all me. I do have an inkling it’ll need to get a little more scheduled and coordinated once the kiddos start arriving haha!

When I’m home alone cleaning, I’ll watch a show on TV, and every commericial break, I try to get as much done as possible in those 3 minutes. It’s really not very efficient, but It works pretty well for me. Or, if I have something in the microwave for a minute or 2, I’ll see if I can load or unload the dishwasher before it beeps.
Basically, you need to make it a race or other kind of game.

spazzychica: I have a vinyl record player and over the years have been buying up old records at secondhand stores and garage sales. When I am doing household chores, I put on one of my records (classical music, jazz/blues, classic rock, oldies), and light a scented candle. I don’t turn on the TV – I turn it into a meditative activity. 🙂

Music helps me power through. When I’m rocking out to the favorite songs of my youth, the time goes much faster.

If there are only two addults in the home, there really need not be mess.
Put things away as you use them.
Clean up after yourself- if you spill something wipe it up.
Clean the shower when you are in it before you shower. If you have glass doors, use a squeegee after your shower.
Other than that, you can do housework a bit at a time. You don’t have to wait and have a marathon session. Sweep the floor in the kitchen in the evening after doing the dishes. Clean the bathroom fixtures when you are in the bathroom and it occurs to you. Take 5 minutes to dust.
This way your home is always clean. You don’t have to give up your time off to clean.

Thanks for the advice ladies! It seems that music is a recurring theme. I do feel better if I’m groovin’ to a beat putting away laundry. I should try using it at other times too.
TheHappyWife: Your suggestion made me LOL
julies1949: I think your ideas make a lot of sense! If I do a little at a time it seems much less daunting. I just have to get into the habit.
