Dr GreenEyedMoon, what a successful procedure!!
I used my moms veil and ring pillow for our wedding, and neither were "preserved", but put away in a box. My parents got married 31 years before me, and they were both very yellow and the veil had some kind of stain on it. We were worried they wouldn't make it, but the dry cleaner worked her magic and they seriously looked brand new on our wedding day! People were shocked when they realized that it was moms veil that I wore, I was amazed at how clean it got.
And get this - I wore a lace dress, and my mom wore a lace trim dress, so she had a tulle veil with lace trim as well. The lace trim on her veil matched my dress almost perfectly, like they were made to go together. How crazy scary is that??? I had my dress made overseas in China, so how that happened I had no idea. I guess that's why people were so shocked that they weren't made together. I loved wearing my moms veil, she cried when I put it on and swore my Grandma was in the room as well (she had passed the year before). Goosebumps!!
@GreenEyedMoon: yes, post a picture, cuz then you will have 2000 posts! ;-)
@soyjoy222: I forgot to take one. :( I'll try and get a few tonight.
@MrsSl82be: I took the veil to a couple of cleaning places, but they said they weren't comfortable working with the antique fabric. I'm glad my own procedures didn't destroy it.
Isn't it wonderful how things work out? I didn't know for sure that I would be able to wear my mom's veil when I went dress shopping, but I brought it with me, and my one demand was that the dress work with her veil. I was so excited when I tried on my favorite dress and discovered that it looked like it had been made to match the veil. The two look beautiful together.
EDIT: OH NOES! 2000 posts and no picture! I'll post some tonight. I'm also getting my bridal portraits done this weekend, so I'll be able to post awesome photos of it soon.
Congrats on your successful surgery doctor! Its great that you'll be able to wear your mother's veil. Lol and add me to the list of those who want to see pictures! Maybe post one of you mom in her veil too?
HAHA! I know this post is a few days old but considering I'm doing x-rays in the OR tomorrow (for reals) I just had to laugh! Good work, Doc!
It's a bit late, I know, but I finally have a picture of my mommy on her wedding day with the veil! It's not a detail photo, but you get the idea. I've also decided that I'm going to cut off the skirt on her dress and make it tea length so I can wear it to the rehearsal dinner. You can see me in her dress here.

Princess Kate copied HER style ;) She looks lovely! I am sure you will too:)
That's such an awesome story. Love how meaningful your veil and reception dress are going to be since they were worn by someone so dear to you :)
Yay! Congratulations!
I wish I had my veil-I think it got put in a plastic bag-and ended up in the trash (years ago). :(
@KatyElle: I really do. No questions here about if she's really my mom or not.
@creativeplannertobee: That's so sad. I'm so sorry to hear it.

...On my mommy's veil! My grandfather was a drycleaner, so the day after my parents' wedding, he whisked away her dress and veil to preserve them both. A few months ago, we finally unsealed them after almost thirty years in their box. The dress had aged just fine, but the veil had a massive brownish yellow stain, the lace was falling off the tulle in several places, and the comb was broken. This was very unfortunate because although I didn't care for my mom's dress, I wanted to wear her gorgeous, lace-edged, cathedral-length veil.
Anyway, last night, after starting with Woolite delicate hand-wash detergent, I was worried the stain wouldn't come out. I eventually pulled out the bleach, even though I was worried about the antique fabric (especially since lace isn't known as the most resilient thing ever). After ten minutes with that, the color looked as good as new. Forty-five minutes later, after a bit of work with a needle and thread, the lace was reattached and a new comb sewn in at the top. It looks fantastic.
The veil went into the recovery room, eventually woke up from its anesthesia, and is expected to make a full recovery after its surgery. I'm definitely going to be able to wear my mommy's veil!
