I have been thinking about this. I have a pretty great washer - huge - no spinner in the middle - it's great, maybe I should throw my dress in there. Wouldn't hurt - right?
Sweeeeet.
Sometimes I think the dry cleaning business has a real racket going...
on a show here in BC awhile back, called shopping bags, they did a whole thing about dry cleaning vs washing at home. a lot of things can be done at home! and there are products out there, like bags to put the garment in and then toss it in the washer to help keep it safe!
haha that's excellent!! i play that game too...see what things look like after i throw them in the washer/dryer...it's a gamble, and it gives me a little rush ;) sometimes it doesn't go as planned though (read: learned first time doing laundry NOT to put merino wool in the washer/dryer :) that's awesome that the dress came out like new!
I've always wondered about this type of thing because I have tons of suits for work that cost a FORTUNE to dry-clean. I can't do the whole Dryel thing because we use a laundromat.
I've definitely shrunk up a very modest dark green wool dress into a very short Christmas minidress, only to be worn with tights now. Eek! I would guess synthetics probably wash easily. Hm. Not sure.
I don't know if this is an old wives tale type thing, but I've heard if the tag says "Dry Clean" it's a 'suggestion' and you can get away with washing, but if says "Dry Clean Only", it would be ruined with the water. I haven't been bold enough to try it out yet... but, I'd think some fabrics would be ok. I may just try it with an old bridesmaid dress :)
I clean just about everything in the wash. If it says to dry clean I stick it in on cold and a gentle cycle then line dry. I have washed a couple dry clean only things but I put those in a mesh beg before....I totally think the dry cleaners is a hoax!
Ejs: do you plan on wearing the dress sometime soon or something? You in another wedding ;) So if it didn't work in your washing machine, that was just a risk you were willing to take huh?! Glad it turned out ok!
Actually, I like the color of the fabric...just NOT as a dress. It's sort of a bright springy green. So i wanted to use it for pillows, but decided the fabric needed to be cleaned first. If it was ruined, no big deal. I just like the color and felt i needed to use an expensive dress somehow. It was WAY too uncomfortable to ever wear again
@ejs: what a great idea turning an old BM dress into pillows! LOVE IT. You should totally do a before (as the dress) and after (as the pillows) thread for the hive to see.
Wow, that's pretty awesome. I didn't know you could machine wash taffeta. Rock on!
great idea turning it into pillows - NOW I know what to do with that lilac dress hanging in my closet from 4 years ago that I HATED!!!
Certain things definitely don't necessarily have to be dry cleaned. My favorite pair of pants for work are wool and I wear them often .. they do just fine in the wash - I just think sometimes clothes have a mind of their own.
I will definitely do a before and after! Good call. Granted I bet I won't get into those until the semester is over! I'm thinking i want to do an applique design or cute flowers with buttons on them. Something springy
Great idea Sand dollar! i'm such a DIY bride, any inspirational pictures would be great! Have fun making those Ejs and do post pics and a tutorial when your done!

....and it came out looking BRAND NEW!
Seriously, I just threw my long bridesmaids dress (complete with a bustle attached) in the washer machine on intermittent and poured in some soap. It had stains on it from bubble solution (from the wedding bubbles) and rain and dirt. It was GROSS.
I took it out and air dried it! It's clean, no streaks, no damage, no bleeding. The crinoline got a little twirled up, but nothing that I couldn't unwind. The material was crepe taffeta; it was a Bill Levkoff dress.
Just so ya know, no need to pay for dry cleaning!
