Some of the Bees have been featured in magazines. Mrs. Magnolia was even in Martha Stewart Weddings!
A lot of times people submit their wedding photos to the magazine and hope they get chosen, but in some cases they or their photographer is contacted by the magazine to be featured. I think an editor or someone notices the pictures from the photographer's blog. That's how Mrs. Magnolia got into Martha Stewart- someone from the company contacted her photographer.
Yes, I think it is the photographer who often drives it. My sister's wedding was featured in the Michigan Knot and I think it was her photographer who sent the photos.
My girlfriend's wedding was also in the Knot magazine. Her photographer submitted the photos to the Knot, and received a response about an hour later! Her pics were gorgeous, so it was a win-win situation for the photographer when it becomes to publicity, and its fun for the bride and groom. Good luck!
Either having a photographer "in the know" or being somewhat famous. One of my friends had a 6-page spread in a national magazine (like People in the US) for her wedding because she had been in the Miss World and Miss Universe pagents for our country a couple of years before she met her husband so she became a huge celebrity (which to this day is hilarious for us! she's like OMG I didn't know people were going to obsess about my make-up or my driving!). :)
It IS usually the photog..and if they see something unusual/noteworthy about the wedding. Now the local mags? I swear I think sometimes these brides pay somebody off b/c I don't "see" the uniqueness/noteworthiness.
