Okay, so for my birthday, FMIL bought me a Nook.

At first I thought it was pretty cool, but now I really kind of miss the physical holding of a book, the bending back of the pages, the ability to get it wet and not freak out...

anyone else not like their e-reader as much as they thought they would?

I can't relate, because I am dying for an e-reader! Good to know though!

@Lindsay12.31.2010: Haha you can have mine! ;)

I get that they are very convenient to have books on-demand and if you're traveling, but I just don't like it like I really thought I would. I've tried to make myself like it-lol!

I love my Nook! However, I do miss the smell of books LOL. It's just so convenient. Maybe because I travel a ton.

I've wanted one for about a year now.  We paid for our entire wedding ourselves, so that didn't happen last year, haha! This year I started my own business, so any extra money goes toward that.  I want one someday though!

Do you exercise?  I LOVE it for the machines at the gym. You know how hard it is to hold a page open when your arms are moving?

@brideatbeach: Oh no! That's such a bummer. I have an older Kindle, (FI got it for me before the Nook was released) and I really like it. I have a library available at my fingertips, can highlight and bookmark, and can have work and personal reads all in once place with easy access.

I wonder if it's like the age old debate of paper date planner vs. digital calendar...

ETA: For the record I'm totally a paper calendar girl, not completely converted to the digital world. And I find myself still buying the occasional book or two, lol!

I'm getting one for my birthday! Hopefully the new Nook, I've been doing TONS of research on it.  But, I'm so excited for mine!

I did have an ipad, but I hated reading on it, the glare was horrible!

I'm sorry to hear that you're not enjoying your Nook.  I have a Nook Color and love it!  My husband got one a few months ago (after testing mine out) and he loves his too.  It's so convenient.  The only bad part is that books are right at my fingertips - even in the middle of the night, I have access to new books (and thus I spend more than I should).  I do use the library function too.

@crh1729: My FH has an iPad and has complained about that same thing! Interesting. I don't have any complaints about the performance or readability with the Nook, I just miss the physical quality of a good ol' fashioned bound book.

My SO got me a kindle for graduation and I thought I wouldn't like it, but I love it!  I was really worried about missing holding an actual book, turning the page, bending the corners, but I really have no complaints with the kindle!

I mostly use my Kindle for Scrabble, to be honest.  I do really like it when I'm travelling (I never could bring enough books for a trip, and always ended up buying them at the airport for way too much $$$), I don't use it for day-to-day reading.

I absolutely LOVE my Kindle! FI bought me one for Christmas and then I actually won one at a work thing a few weeks ago. We went away for a mini break and both read 3 books! Now we wouldnt have taken more than one book away with us!

I still read mine in the bath, at the beach etc. I usually put it in a glad (zip-lock) bag in the bath though, just in case.

I dont like that you cant have it on for take-off and landing though, thats a big pain! I travel a LOT!

Something about e-readers hurts my eyes, so I understand your concerns. I tried a friend's, glad I didn't buy one. the other thing that bothered me was that I couldn't see how far along I was in the book. You can see the page numbers but I like to see the actual amount of pages left. It seems like a really silly thing but I am a fairly visual person and that completely messed with the experience of reading for me.

Oh hun, I feel you. I'm a bookworm, but I'm still refusing to get an e-reader because I love books as physical objects.

I LOVE my Kindle.  I still read 'regular' books just as much, but now I'm reading even more.

I tried the Nook, but it really bothered my eyes and I'm glad I had a friend I could test drive it from.

FI and I got each other Kindles for Christmas without realizing it ;)

I still even read in the tub - I have a plastic case I had for something else that it fits in perfectly!

Love love mine and can't wait until the wedding is over so I get more reading time back!

I'm a book enthusiast. At some point in my teenage years I counted up all my books and I had over a thousand. They are all now in my parent's basement (aside from the bookshelves I collected after moving out of my parent's house--hahaha).

But I LOVE LOVE LOVE my kindle. I read multiple books at a time and for that it's ideal. I also travel a lot and again it's better to carry on thin kindle than 4-5 honking books. I like the idea of saving so much paper and room. And I love the ease and convenience of purchasing books online and sending them to my kindle.

I am not in love with the non-touch kindle interface which makes purchasing and selecting a bit of a hassle, but I assume that will be fixed up with the kindle touch that is rumored to be coming out.

That's pretty much the reason I don't have an e-reader, I know that I would miss holding an actual book, turning pages, etc.

I love using my kindle, I will sometimes read physical books as well and I hate going back to two hands. The only thing is, I got my kindle back when the book prices were low (none over $9.99) and the device prices not ($350) and now the book prices have gone way up and the kindles way down. Frusterating.

I have a Kindle and I LOVE it!! No more books I've already read lying around and you can get most of them cheaper.  I actually bought mine because I have arthritis in my hands and can't hold books open very long without pain.  Maybe you will get used to it.  :)

@brideatbeach: I know what you mean. There´s nothing like real paper books! I have the nook, though, and I love it!.. but basically I use it to read HP fanfiction (yeah, I´m a nerd).. and some few stuff I can´t find on paper (It´s kind of a miracle to find certain books in my country, well)... but truth be told, I prefer to wait a year or two to have a book on paper than to read it straight ahead on the e-reader...

I LOVE my Sony e-reader.  I've had it for awhile now and I'll never go back!  I thought I would miss having an actual book, turning pages, etc - but I don't at all.

@MsJeep23: Hum.  Mine says that I'm on page X of Y so you can definitely tell how far through you are.  Maybe the Kindles or Nooks don't though.

@Miss Sydney: I totally hate that you can't use it during take off and landing (although I usually try to anyway).  The Sony e-readers don't have wi-fi or anything (to buy/add books, you have to connect it to a computer) so it couldn't do anything more to the plane than a paper book could.  So stupid.

I really don't like how expensive it is, too. I feel like I can find better deals on real books than I can with the e-reader because I can really only get them from one source rather than shopping for used books...

i LOVE my kindle. hubby just bought it for me for finishing my first year of grad school, so it's still new and maybe that's why i'm so into it, but for me it's great for novels that i tear through really fast. i read basically all the time for school and i don't think i could use it for that--i think i need to have a physical book for taking notes on the margins and such for books that i need for my classes and my research, but for books that i'm just reading for fun it's perfect. also it's going to be great for reading pdf files/articiles that i need for classes but don't need for my research so i can take it to class without having to print it. i literally read at least a thousand pages per week during the semester for school, and lots of the books are ones i need to buy because i'll need to keep referring to them forever, so my shelves in my nyc apt are really full, and so it's fantastic for saving space too :)

I've wanted to get one but I'm afraid I won't like it as much as real books. I have this weird thing about the "character" of books. The way they get worn and bent and tattered the more I read them.

I just can't do it. e-readers make me hate reading. I will keep buying all my books on paper until they stop printing them. I did download a few free classics on my iPhone but they're pretty much only my emergency stash of reading material in case I don't have any tangible literature with me on the bus.

I think we're going to get FMIL one for her birthday. She loves reading, never has enough books and travels TONS. So I figured this is the perfect gift for her! We'll see if she actually likes reading from it though.

i'm still encamped on the physical book side. i love the smell and feel of books and i especially love that my favorite book is tattered and obviously well-loved and read.

my mister has a kindle that he loves and while i didn't hate it as much as i assumed i would, i'm not completely sold on it. i'll use his from time to time but owning my own? probably not so much. besides, one of my favorite things to do is read the last couple of paragraphs before i start the book. i wasn't able to figure out that ability on the kindle.

I love my nook. It was the best Valentine's Gift ever. I read all the time, so it was more of a necessity, haha. FI got it for me because he saw how many library fines I was racking up because I read through books very quickly...so I used to check out a whole bag of novels at a time so I wouldn't have to make frequent trips. This started to be a problem because it I was late taking the bag back, I'd have a huge fine! (Our library is sort of far away, so I would put off taking the books back). I have bought regular books from time to time since having it, just not as often as I used to.

@brideatbeach - I felt like I'd feel the same way, til I got a Nook cover that felt like a book in my hands when I read. I also got a waterproof sleeve for when I'm at the beach so it keeps sand/water off of it. LOVE my nook!
