I think it depends on the state as far as timeframes. But I would play squeaky wheel until you get an answer from the priest. Either keep calling or try to get a hold of the church receptionist or someone there. Or, go up in person and wait to talk to someone. Even go up there to get it and offer to take it up to the county clerk yourself. Sorry to hear you are going through this, but I'm a big believer in the squeaky wheel gets the grease theory.
Is there anyone else in your parish office who might be able to look into it, or prod the priest to turn it in? Like an administrative assistant, or another priest? I would consider going down to look into it, if I couldn't reach the priest. Not sure if this would have any negative repercussions, but good luck!
Unfortunately, the parish office is closed today due to snow. Also, the parish office and the county clerk are in Toledo, Ohio where we got married, I live in Chicago. The lady at the county clerk already told me it was late and that the priest was in violation since it's due 30 days after the ceremony. I hate having to rely on other people for really important stuff.
So the priest emailed me back. Looks like the certificate was given to the church I was married at (a different church than the priest's parish) and they were responsible for turning that in. Awesome.
Let us know what that church says when you call them! Sorry you're going through this.
In the eyes of the Church, you are married. Marriage is not formed by your contract. It is formed by the mutual consent you express to each other at the marriage ceremony. You consent to marry and thus you marry each other. As for the State recognizing the marriage, that is a whole other thing. Eventually it will be resolved, but I'd say temporarily its going to be a slight headache. Just try to focus on what you can do and let God control the rest. It'll work out in the end. Worrying doesn't solve problem.
I hope it was turned in. I'm pretty sure that they would consider the importance of this and do it as it should be. Maybe the weather caused some hold-up?
Ok, so I heard from my priest and the church I was married in today. Here's what happened. My priest had two weddings that day, and sent in both licenses in one envelope. The county must have only seen the one license. So, the county will be sending out a duplicate license to my priest, he will sign it, send it back in and then we will get our marriage certificate. So glad, that it's an easy resolution!
I'm glad it was resolved! I hope you don't have problems with the tax return since it isn't recorded yet.
Hurray, problem solved! See, it is all working out. You are married :)
Well, luckily taxes aren't due... yet.... but it stinks to have to wait! Glad there was a resolution found and that it's the states fault not the church, lol.

So, we haven't received our marriage certificate yet. It's been about 40 days. I know we got married around the holidays so things might take a bit longer. I just called the county courthouse where we got our license and THEY haven't received it from our priest yet. Awesome. I called our priest and he didn't answer, so I left a message and emailed him.
Does anyone know if this will have any negative repercussions? Like, are we technically not married? Cuz we just filled out our joint tax return last night.... And we're trying to get a mortgage.... Ugh.... I wish that I was responsible for turning in the marriage certificate, because then I know it would have gotten done. What happens if our priest lost it? Any answers or advice would be great.
