Oh, somebody either knock me out or HELP MOI!

This is my first lady-times off birth control in EIGHT YEARS, because my dumb butt was late making a GYN appointment. I feel like I'm dying. That may be a little overly dramatic, but it's true. I don't even remember how to handle this pain and... stuff! I've been a light 2-day girl for the past eight years.

I don't know what to doooo! I am supposed to have an exam at 1 pm, so taking muscle relaxers is sort of out of the question. I'm really woozy, crazy pained, you-know-what-ing like a stuck pig, and on the verge of hurling. Mr. Scissors is telling me to email my prof and stay home. She's sweet enough that this wouldn't be an issue, but I feel weird emailing her all "LADY TIMES DYING CAN'T COME."

So, any ideas on what I should do? Should I bite the bullet and email my prof? Or suck it up? Anything I could take/do that wouldn't impair my brain? I took 4 advil 50 minutes ago, but it hasn't done jack.

I know the feeling.  Definitely contact prof to see if any make-up can be scheduled because it'll be very hard to concentrate while you're dying!!

Can he run out and get those self-stick heating pads? They're kinda weird, but they really, really work! I get the kind for the upper back and stick them on- they don't take up much room under your pants. I was totally a skeptic til I had those kind of cramps and a friend at work FORCED me to try one and it REALLY helped!

Ohhhh, I feel you! I just switched birth controls this month, but I, too, was late in making my appointment. Which means that the pill isn't all the way in my system and MY GOD I FORGOT CRAMPS WERE THIS PAINFUL. I spent all last night curled in a ball grumbling a moaning. A hot bath made it worse (?!) somehow, and I could barely eat chocolate.

So, I don't know what to tell you, but believe me, I can commiserate.

@KM- He's actually in Hotlanta, and I'm down in LG. My parents are both at the beach. Raaarrrrgh. I've tried those thermacare doods, but all the did was make my lady-zone hot. (Ow owww).

@penned- I have one on the front and back. I feel like a grilled cheese.

Oh No! That suuuucks! I would suggest e-mailing your prof and telling her that you are unable to make it because you are experiencing some side effects related to changing a perscription med. Totally legitimate. You can't help that your body is tweeking out after a major shift in hormone levels! I hope you feel better soon!

Heating pads, ginger ale, and aleve.  I don't know why, but aleve kicks tylenol and advil's collective butts when it comes to cramps/muscle pain.

Feel better -the first time off of birth control suuuucks.

@Rosie- Ah, that's a good way to word it. A lot less embarrassing. I might give in!

@April- I should try to scare up some Aleve. I have some diet cherry coke, but I'll probably switch to ging soon. I had no idea it would be this bad off bc! Thankfully I have a gyn appointment coming up soon.

Oh crap, but I hope not too soon!! Then you can't do the appointment, right?! Aaargh.

I literally feel your pain.  My cramps are so unbearably painful (have been since middle school), that I literally can't stand the pain when I'm off the pill.  Honestly, the only thing that makes me feel better is to curl up in bed in the fetal position with a heating pad and pass out.

I would stick it out for another hour or so to see if the meds kick in, which they sometimes do for me.  Otherwise, I'd be sending an "I have stomach flu" email.  That's my ge-out-of-class email of choice.

I would def email your prof, especially if you think it won't be a big deal to reschedule.  I'd say something along the lines of what Rosiebear said.  Just something generic about switching prescriptions, so you don't have to say you have lady problems (for some reason it sounds more legitimate, I think).  There's no point in trying to take an exam when you're feeling miserable and won't be able to concentrate as well.  Good luck and feel better!

Get a hold of your prof!!! Drink lots and lots of water. I like to lay down in bed and curl up in a ball. If you can sleep, do it! Sorry you're not having a fun time.If you can find a heating pad, use it.

I felt that way coming off BC, too. In middle school/hs I always felt like I was about to throw up because the cramps hurt so bad! I hope you start feeling better!

Well if your professor would let you reschedule that'd be one thing. However, professors didnt let you reschedule at my university unless you had the flu. Pain didn't count. They were pretty relentless. And she might think you're just being lame. I once woke up with the flu the morning of a calculus exam and i had to GO to student death and get a nausea shot. He almost didn't excuse me but i threw up like 3 times on the way there and i had to get proof faxed over. It was ridiculous.

I took plenty of exams doped up on painkillers or muscle relaxers. They don't affect my brain to the point I can't focus. But i do have to make an effort to think. But a test is only an hour...so power through, then go home and nap in your sweatpants!.

I wish i had some practical advice for you, but I'd take percocet or vicodin for my cramps so I'm really no help in the non-Rx department. Could you call up your obgyn for a prescription? After the first hour my brain would settle down if i took one of those tablets--sometimes i'd only take half if i wasn't sure how i'd feel. Advil doesn't do jack squat in my opinion (unless you start taking it regularly a few days before you START your period). If you take it for a few days before it'll help significantly though.

    Lady time=no fun.

@EJS: I've known my prof since I was 6, and this is a teee-niny school, so it won't be an issue. She's coming to the wedding, etc, so I'll be fine in that respect. I know when I was in regular undergrad at GT, you had to be dying to get out of an exam. Once I had to leave a test to go hurl. lol.

It's a German essay test, so I think that with drugs would be detrimental to my brains. (German lit in German. If I could write it in le English it would be another story).

Take some ibuprofen! It really, really helps. Well, at least for me. Some people it doesn't. I generally take an ibuprofen (you can generally take up to two at a time though) then a nap and I wake up and the cramps feel at least "muted" and I can function. I never tried a hot pack so idk how well those work.

In that case, I'd just ask if you could maybe take it later in the day or first thing tomorrow morning!!!!!!

Your professor sounds MUCH nicer than my profesors--they were like GT crazy. Mine were pretty brutal and not understanding. One professor threw a hissy fit when i told him DH was getting deployed to Iraq and I'd miss a week of class (or, you know, 3 days...). I had to go talk to the department head about that one....

Surely you can't be in that much pain in a few more hours??? Maybe by the time 3 or 4 rolls around you can function enough for that test.

And yeah, I'd think a german lit essay would be too intense for the drugs. Boo =*(

Feel better soon though! I totally 100% sympathize!

I say call the prof, explain that you're sick.  Then, take the muscle relaxers, curl up in a ball, and feel better!

The good thing about female teachers:  they generally understand maladies of the fairer gender.

That said, she might be harder on you for it.  You could say "well I'm *really* not feeling well, can I reschedule?"  but she might want a note from the local health center... and you *know* all they are going to do is give you a scrip for extra-strength-what-you-are-already-taking-that's-not-working...

I'd send a friendly email and ask if it is possible.

:-(   Feel better Scissors!  I am totally terrified of what is going to happen when I go off the pill.  I've been on it for 12 years now, and I remember the ABSOLUTE HELL that I used to go through every single month.  Pretty much I had to take a day or 2 off from high school each month, which really sucked.

When I'm late making my doctors appointments I can usually still call my doctor, and she will call in a couple months refill of my prescription to the pharmacy to hold me over until my appointment.  Can you do the same?

Someone probably already suggested this (I haven't read the responses yet) but you can call your doctor to schedule your next appointment AND ALSO ask them to refill your prescription by phone in the meantime. They will almost always do it for you!

Hopefully you were able to figure out something with your prof in the meantime!!

BTW, Ibuprofin is the most effective OTC painkiller for menstrual pain. If you don't have any, get some!

I felt like this yesterday. Strangely, working out actually made me feel WAY better (well, a good lunch and working out...). Pre-BC I never had a single cramp, PMS moment, etc. My period was simply a slightly stickier time in the month (pads, yuck!). Now that I've gone off after 10+ years, there is at least one day a month I feel like I took a sledgehammer to the uterus. So, I totally, 100% feel your pain! So far, the only thing I've found which helps is exercise- although I don't want to work out during these times because I am caught wanting to throw up, poop, and/or clutch my stomach crying in a ball. None of those things makes you want to hit the gym, but I swears it helps!

I hope you are feeling better and/or able to reschedule your exam! The ladies ought to be a "get out of school/work for two-five days" a month free card!

@Rabbit, in Korea, I believe the women get a "lady's day" once a month. I want one! and lol @ "wanting to throw up, poop, and/or clutch my stomach". There's a reason your menstrual cycle screws with your GI tract.

    Scissors, you feeling better???

Oh PS i think swimming helps. Like, floating in a pool if you can. It alleviates the pressure. A hot bath also feels good. With lots of bubbles. Mmmmm bath =]
