I think my hamster is dying

There might not be much the vet can do. Hamsters usually live 2-3 years. Mine died at about 2.5 years. We weren’t really sure what happened, but he was just really sluggish and then he died. I was only 10 so I don’t really remember all the details.

I’m sorry to hear this. We had multiple hamsters growing up and unfortunately most of them died around the two year mark. They would get sluggish and have problems walking. Usually my mom would take them to the vet and have them put down (dad thought it was a waste of money but mom didn’t want to watch it suffer). Usually they had cancer or they were just old in general. I personally would take it to the vet if I had the money just because I hate thinking about the poor thing suffering. However, like PP said I doubt there is much they can do at this point.

Awwww I feel your pain! I’m almost 28 and still mourn the loss of my hamster Magnus, who died 2 years ago! He was around 2 as well. I hope he feels better, he is a cutie!

@ashley99:  he’s a sweetie! Is he a teddy bear hamster? mine was, he was a light brown color and his name was Brownie (…I mean, I was 8 when I named him). They’re such adorable little fluff balls. It was hard for me when Brownie died too, I was really sad. I’m sorry he’s not doing well, but it sounds like he’s had a nice long life.

I’m just not sure that it’s worth a vet visit. Hamsters (and rodents in general) have such short life spans–1-3 years, depending on the type. If you can’t afford a vet visit, I would probably cancel, as it’s highly likely they’re going to tell you that it’s dying and there’s nothing they can do. I had to stop keeping rodents for this very reason.

@vorpalette:  +1. OP, if you can’t afford it, I wouldn’t bother going either. Your little guy is very cute and I don’t normally care for rodents. I find it hard enough to deal with the life expectancy of dogs, so I couldn’t deal with 1-3 years with a furbaby.

I am shocked at all these people saying not to take him to the vet! how horrible, where is your compassion? He is a living thing and deserves care. I have had hamsters and took them to the vet when sick and given meds etc. I even had one put to sleep when the outlook wasnt good. It is only right. Good luck OP, I hope your baby gets well soon.

@ashley99:  you are a great pet owner. It is hard to see any animal suffer, but especially a beloved pet. Hopefully the vet can so something to ease his pain. best to you and Furbert!

I lost my baby girl not so long ago, she was only about 9 months old. As my mum told me, hamsters are so so tiny and if even the littlest thing goes wrong with them then it wreaks havoc on their bodies, even just the stress of being ill can be enough.

ifit’s any comfort then your boy has managed to enjoy an awesomely long, and I presume enjoyable life, you seem like a caring owner so I’m sure that he was want for nothing <3

Im glad thatyou’re going to the vets (even though people are saying not to??), though I’m sure that you know you may need to prepare yourself for the worst, I’m incredibly sorry to say, but isn’t that better than watching him suffer any longer?

Anyway,I wish all the very best to you and furbert, he’s such a cutie and I’m glad that he found as good a home with you xx
