No, your makeup should look good in person and in pictures! It can be done! I'm so sorry to hear that your trial was such a disaster. If it makes you feel any better, I liked my trial just fine, but I made my makeup artist redo my foundation on the day-of because I thought it looked too cakey (in my sleep-deprived and overemotional state, I also bawled about it...pretty funny now). I liked the redo very much.
I would call the salon and tell them you were dissatisfied with your makeup consultation. You deserve to be heard, and you are not wrong to dislike the work. You are entitled to your opinion and as good businesspeople they should try to please you. They may offer you another trial at no cost. Orat least they should let you out of your contract if you are dissatisfied.
Also try doing your own makeup and see how it looks! Lots of brides do their own makeup. Post pics on here; the hive is oh so very helpful in these matters!
It is typical for wedding makeup to look heavy in real life, but not quite to the degree you feel yours did. It definitely shouldn't be dripping off your face! Can you post a photo?
I know actors wear VERY heavy makeup that definitely looks like a clown up close, but on stage it doesn't and it makes them look flawless. Maybe that's what your make-up artist was going for. That said, there are happy mediums! Definitely let them know that you didn't like it, and try to negotiate from there, depending what they tell you. Maybe say that your FI hated it, if you don't want them to say "well, why didnt you say anything before you left" type of thing. I didn't like my makeup after my consultation, but I just let her know what I didn't like (blue eye shadow- yikes!) and she fixed it for the day of the wedding :) It'll work out!
Obviously she didn't do airbrush or use another form of foundation or it wouldn't have been so cakey.
What city are you in? Maybe some bees here in your area can give you great advice on which makeup artists are best!
Thanks for all the advice! Here are a couple pics. Don't I look thrilled? Whaddya think? Does the foundation look caked on? I think that second picture looks particularly terrible! Should I try airbrush on the day of?
Omg. This is my nightmare. I HATE when I can see makeup on my own face. Like in the second picture. It seems to me that it's not the right shade for your skin, but I'm extremely picky about that.
The first picture doesn't look bad, maybe the eyes are a little to heavy and the lips a bit bright, but is that what you wanted?
I would let them know how you feel. It doesn't hurt to try another makeup artist either.
I rather like the eye makeup. Am not to sure about that shade of lipstick, but that could just be my personal taste in colours so if you like it that's the main thing.
But the foundation is pretty bad. It looks very cakey and thick, and I think it is making you look like you have wrinkles where you don't. I agree with MsHymanRoth that its not the right shade for your skin.
It might just be the texture of the make up making it look so cakey. Do you have dry skin? Sometimes makeup that looks good on one skin type doesn't look good on another. I have problems with dry skin and most makeup ends up looking flakey on me.
I would definately tell the makeup artist you weren't happy and if you can't get another makeup artist because of contracts etc. Arrange for another trial run, it, make her get it right at the trial before you leave. Its your big day you don't want to be feeling selfconcious about your make up. You are paying for a service so make sure you get what you want. If you have a foundation you use that you like maybe take that along with you.
I agree, I find the eyes to be quite pretty
However the foundation, wow. That is cakey sorry hun! Either its not the greatest of quality foundation or you are not moisturizing ha ha. But in all honesty it could be a combo of them both
Before your next trial maybe the night before exfoliate your face, buff all that dry skin off and moisturize like a demon! (if your not used to exfoliating) it might make the canvas of your face smoother for a better application so it wouldnt look so cakey!
Good luck!
I agree with the others, I'd say definitely get another trial or ask for a different artist - especially since you felt SO uncomfortable with it! I think the eyes look fine, but yeah, that foundation is definitely a bit much. And I'd try a different lip color, it might not feel so clownish with a more subtle color, but that might also be my personal taste in lip color coming out :)
It all comes down to how you feel! If you are really unhappy with how it all looked you need to tell them and have it done over again so that you can be confident going into the appointment on the day of your wedding! The last thing you want to be worrying about is hoping that they don't cake on the foundation!
Phew. I feel better. Thanks, everyone. They're gonna give me another trial, free of charge.
Great! You want to be happy and confident on your wedding day!
I just had my hair/make-up trial last weekend. I liked how she did the make-up but I wasn't too sure about the color she used on my eyes. Now I picked out the color based on the options that she had, but in the end it wasn't what I wanted and by the end of the night it did not look good at all. I've decided that I'm going to go to Clinique and have them test all their colors until I find exactly what I want and then let her use my make up on the wedding day.
I think I don't love it b/c you look so unhappy, but really it looks fine! Maybe too light if anything, but if you don't like it, get out of the contract! I did 6 trials (all free or free w/ purchase before I found my girl -try makeup counters -I love M.A.C. or even ULTA or Sephora!) Good luck. I got SO many compliments on my makeup -it was dramatic, yet natural -she was a bloody MAGICIAN. Good luck, hon!!
my foundation also looked a bit cakey, but it was because i have dry skin and hadn't used moisturizer or exfoliant...what happens is the foundation goes on top of little flakes of dry skin. The makeup artist recommended using exfoliating facial cleanser up til the wedding, and moisturizer, esp the morning of.
Maybe you could try doing that yourself to see if it would make a big difference.
Good luck!!

I think my makeup trial was a disaster...
but I'm not sure. I can't tell. That's not good, right?
Under the lights, at the place where she did my makeup, it looked pretty good. I liked what the foundation did for me, I thought the eye makeup looked a little heavy, but maybe that's how it's done?
Well, I got in the car afterward and peeked at myself in the mirror. I looked like a clown. Thick, dark eyes. Cakelike foundation - it looked like it was dripping off my skin (but mind you, it was probably 100+ degrees in the car). Overly shiny lips. I wanted to cry.
I picked up FI from work and asked for his opinion. "It looks...okay. Do you have stuff on your face?" Oh God. I immediately called the place, but it was after five and they must have closed. I had him snap a couple of pictures of me. And they looked okay!
So it looks disastrous up close, in person, but looks good in pictures? Is that how it's supposed to be?
Should I call the place tomorrow? What do I say - "I hate it"? I do NOT want to pay for another consultation. I just want to do my own makeup now, but I may have entered into a contract. Argh.
