I think the sprint/walk combo is harder than continuous jogging

So, I went to the gym this evening and decided to try something I haven't done before. I've only been running on the treadmill for about a week, but so far, it's pretty much been continuous jogging at a moderate pace (anywhere from 4.5 mph to 5.5 mph) with maybe three or four 2-minute "breaks" in between 10 or 11 minute intervals.

Now as you know, jogging isn't easy by any stretch of the imagination, but tonight I tried the ever-popular sprint/walk combination and thought I was going to smooth pass out. I got on the treadmill at 9:05 pm and walked for about 4 minutes, then started my intervals. One minute sprint (6.5 mph) one minute walk (3.5 mph) one minute sprint (6.5 mph) one minute walk (3.2 mph) and so forth. Every so often I would even sprint for 2 minutes.

Now, I realize to some of you runners (especially if you're tall!) that 6.5 mph probably doesn't sound like much of a sprint, but I assure you, at 5'4 with legs like little stocky tree trunks, 6.5 mph is definately a freaking sprint!

Anyway I got off the treadmill at 9:55 pm, and out of curiosity, I checked my heart rate on the monitor. 185 BPM!! Fast forward to midnight, and I'm still feeling the effects of it. I don't know if I pushed myself too hard or what (being a novice runner and all ;) but I really think if I keep it up the weight might start to fall off!

Just wanted to share that I now understand the hype associated with interval running! It kicked my butt!

Haha, I'm interval running for the C25K program. It is tough! I just finished my first week of run 60 seconds, walk 90 seconds and I'm feeling it.

Honestly, the first night was the roughest and it took my legs 2 days to recover. Night two wasn't nearly as bad and tonight I'm barely feeling it, except in my butt :p

    It will get easier!

It's hard but so worth it! You get results so much faster, and it really whips you into shape.

it is hard but i love it! granted, i'm not really loving it when i have to dig deep for the last few ounces of power to make it through my last running interval but yeah, it does get you working a lot more than continuous jogging. good luck!

I heard that switching it up like that instead of doing the same thing at a continual pace is much more effective!!  Good Luck!

It is so hard!  Your heart and breathing have to constantly adjust.
