I think we narrowed down my setting. My great grandfather was a jeweler and he made a ring for my mom. when my parents got divorced she sold the diamond but not the setting. We are going to tweek the setting a bit as it needs to be sized just a bit (moms finger was a 7 and im a 7 and 3/4.. its yellow gold so we are going to have it plated.. and its set right now for a princess cut and I want a pear). While I am up in Pittsburgh this coming weekend we are going to head to Orrs and see what they would charge for the tweaking and I know SO wanted to know if they could make a halo on this as well. Normally I would say lets get a new ring but because this has so much sentimental value.. and the changes that need to be made arent huge.. Its worth a try at least.  Here is the current setting..

Thats so special, My mum offered me her setting, but I know my little sister really wants it, and I wasn't in love with it, so I told her to put it away for her. :)

Roux.. My mom gave me this setting along time ago. Both me and my two sisters all got jewelry from my mom. Im so excited because not only can I give this to my kids, but my SO and I finally are really starting to get things moving and I am soo excited! Ill see if I can get a better picture of it today, the one last night made it look so cheap.

@theren- that is so cool! You'll have a setting from your mother and a stone from your husband, together, to pass down. Very sentimental :)

Pretty!  I love the idea of a family ring.  (Which is probably something to tell MNbf before he plunks down $$ for a new one, huh?)

@mngf- lol yup! I had brought it up awhile ago when he told me he was worried about being able to afford the ring right now as he just lost his job. So we had a long talk and he asked me if I would be ok using moms ring. I told him for sure. we can always upgrade eventually and like I said I wanted a piece I could use for an Heirloom one day.

@Ren- if you want another option or quote on the price, Ceasar's Designs on Walnut Street in Shadyside made my wedding band and we were very happy with his work. He does lots of custom stuff.

@Jeni- Thank you so so much! I will tell SO when I talk to him today since he was the one who said we should go to Orrs. I dont see any of the changes to the current setting realistically costing more than $200-$250 since its all pretty easy stuff to do.

@KM- I have ALWAYS had a thing for pears.. and since 2005 when I went to hawaii and saw a pear shaped yellow diamond have always wanted one. I told SO I'd be just as happy with a yellow sapphire and later upgrading to a yellow diamond.

I will say the fact I mentioned the setting to him has got him really excited because he feels now he can put the money he had budgeted for my full ring to a really nice stone!

OOOOH!!! My grandmother has a ring quite similar to this with a PEAR-cut solitaire and it's freakin gorgeous!! Literally, it looks like the exact same setting...I can try and take a pic of it the next time I see her but I think a pear-shaped diamond will look perfect in it!

@trail- OOO please do! I was looking at the setting and it looks very easy to remove the current princess prongs and add new ones for a pear, but id love to see something that is already made!

That's a gorgeous setting! And I think it's awesome you're going to keep the setting for sentimental reasons :)
