I was in a job pool with the Department of National Defence here in Canada. Well my name got pulled! It was a year since the pool was created so I had thought it was expired, but I guess not. A couple of weeks ago I interviewed with the Tank Replacement Project and my job would be to process the Army’s travel claims and book travel for our overseas workers. Not deployed soldiers but people working for DND over in Germany, the Middle East, and other places.
Right now I am contract for the Feds working for a different department. The contract means you have no sick leave, no benefits and basically no rights as an employee, as a contractor, you are basically a resource, like say… a computer. The job with DND, I am term which isn’t permanent but has all the rights of a perm employee plus you can apply for jobs that are only advertized internally.
I will have to take a small pay cut (most because I will be paying for benefits now, and into a pension) and leave a job that I have been in for years and leave a great boss and great co-workers, kind of scary but starting a new job is exciting and I think I need to do it to move forward in my career.
Plus working for DND makes me feel closer to my FI who is currently deployed and the added bonus is, when we get posted, I will be able to apply with current DND experience on my resume to the DND base located there.
A change is good, but I’m still a bit scared!! I sign my letter of offer in a couple of days then I have to give notice.
Wish me luck Bees please J
