Hey gals! I've been lurking for some time now but this is my first post. I'm at my wits end trying to find a venue for our wedding (spring/summer 2010)! The biggest issue is budget- we are trying to stay at $85/pp or less. Caterer needs to be kosher (we have a friend of the family who is a caterer so this may not be an issue). Basically we just need to find a place that fits 300 ppl for a sit down dinner, and either a venue fee of $8000 or less, OR no venue fee and a per person fee of $85/each with our OWN caterer. It will be a sunday in May-September. Any suggestions?!? I'm trying to avoid Long island because, frankly, it just feels so cheesy to me. We've looked at The Prince George Ballroom and we liked it a lot but I think we need more options. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

    Thanks :)

$85/pp is going to be tight in NYC.  If you are open to relative close LI location - Westbury Manor is within your budget and nice. They have live peacocks roaming the grounds and the staff was very helpful.  Will you consider NJ?

The NJ suburbs of NYC aren't really cheaper...

Tricky.  Since you have a fairly small guest list, have you considered a restaurant?  That might be a good option considering your budget, and a lot of them have beautiful and private back rooms that are available for parties.  Hope that helps!

Yah bubbys is a great option.  I'm looking at restaurants myself.  I'm just remember my favorite places and asking them how much for a Sunday.  just try that!

Also, there are a couple of places in Queens I've heard are good.  Not 100% sure on prices but Metropolitan Building and Smack Mellon are options but I think because they are pretty bare you'd have to rent a lot.

How is alcohol figuring into your event? Speaking to a number of venues I was still getting $100+/pp estimates for service and alcohol plus the cost of Kosher food if we were bringing in a Kosher caterer on a Sunday in August. You might be able to save some money if you find a place that allows you to bring in your own alcohol or limit the choices to wine and beer and maybe a specialty cocktail?

I agree restaurants might be your best bet and have heard people say great things about them.

Does your venue have to be able to support your ceremony or are you being married in a Synagogue?

PS September is a tricky month with the High Holidays this year.

    Keep us posted!

TobeMrsG -ya' beat me to it! I was also going to suggest asking a Synagogue or searching through local boards on Judaism, etc.

I think a restaurant is your best bet. The suburbs outside of the city aren't any cheaper - and ironically LI is your best bet for pricing. The only place I can think of that's around your budget is the Villa Barone in the Bronx. I'm sure they have a kosher menu but they're more old school Italian - can't hurt to call, right?

Get in touch with Prestige Catering - they can hook you up with some venues they work with so if you tell them your budget, they will try and work with you.  We went that route until we opted to just rent a space ourselves and find a kosher caterer.

Definitely, the outer boros will be your best bet - primarily Queens, there are a handful in Bklyn, but not a lot, and then LI - really the best place with the many options.  I can tell you right now, having done this search myself since early last year - you will not find a place in the city for kosher with that budget.  If you really want a city location, try one of the synagogues or places like Manhattan Jewish Experience that'll have a space to rent out for 300pm (also Jewish Museum, etc.).  That will probably require you to use your caterer friend because the cost of the rental and caterer will be well over $85pp.

Lots of folks have recommended using restaurants but that will be a problem unless you have a mobile kosher kitchen because of kashering issues.  You'd be better off trying for kosher restaurants if you want to do that.
