Hello bees! I wanted to share my experience with diamond vs moissanite in case it could be helpful to anyone (and because I am freaking excited and want to show my ring off!)
I learned about moissanite after I had already gotten engaged. I saw it all over the boards here and how economical was, and I told my (then) FI about this cool space gem. He told me that he had stumbled upon it during his search for my ring, but he didn’t think I would want a non-diamond stone. I wish we had talked about it a little more before getting engaged, because we were students and I wanted something inexpensive, and he thought the only option was a diamond.
Anyway, I drooled over the moissanites on the ring board for quite a while, and fell madly in love with the OECs. I loved the colors they threw off and the big chunky facets. I LOVE the design of my ring, not only because it’s beautiful but because my husband picked out the design just for me. However, I know that he did not pick out the diamonds, they are just the stock, mall quality stones that came in the ring. The center stone was definitely not eye clean and that bothered me a bit.
We have now been married almost two years and are moving out of state soon. When I learned that Joseph Schubach Jewelers is located in our current state, I brought up the possibility of having a RHR made with a barely pink OEC moissy before we left, so that I could see the stone in person before we left the state. He agreed, but knowing my slight obsession with moissanite, suggested we see if we could have one put into my engagement ring. I was thrilled!
We made an appointment, visited Schubachs, and I got to finally see moissy in person! I loved the sparkle, and adored the old European cut in person, but the unenhanced was a little too warm to match with my ring. Beth ordered some forever brilliant OECs , and I got to pick my stone. It was still a little warmer than the side stones (it’s a three stone ring) so Beth helpfully suggested replacing all three stones with OECs so they would match. The smallest OECs offered are the perfect size for my side stones, so it seemed like an awesome solution!
I picked up my finished ring from their office a few days ago, and it is just perfect. I was worried that maybe the side stones would be slightly different in size and it would throw off the proportions of the ring, or that the moissanites would have too much color once I saw them in different lighting, but I couldn’t be happier with the change! I can see a faint green color when I’m in the car, but I think that’s a reflection of my tint on my windshield. And honestly, every color it shows is beautiful. It is so sparkly it’s like a little disco ball on my finger! Most of the time it is just as white as my diamond, but with more sparkles and clearer cut. It is EXACTLY what I wanted!
Enough rambling, here are the pictures! My original center stone was .38, uncertified but my receipt from the jeweler says it was I1/I2 clarity. New center is .50 (slightly larger but that wasn’t the reason for the change. It was the closest to the size stone I already had) forever brilliant OEC moissanite. I also asked for claw prongs and I think they are fabulous!
The photo above is the closest comparison picture I have managed so far. Same location in my car, sunny day in the shade. Top is “before” and bottom is “after.”
The photo above is two “after” pictures I snapped in the car right after I picked it up. I think the top one shows the claw prongs really well, and the bottom shows the lovely cut and pastel colors that I adore! My ring came back from Schubach’s looking way better than it ever had from the jeweler it was purchased from! There were a few places that had been scratched/gouged next to the side stones by the original jeweler when he tightened the tension set side stones that had come loose. On subsequent visits the jeweler had never fixed this. I certainly wasnt expecting it to be fixed by another jeweler, but those gouges are now perfectly smooth, shiny, and you would never know they were there. I am really happy we had Schubach’s do this, he really does a wonderful job and their customer service is excellent!
A few more ring pictures, all in the car:
