On black friday I got a new, bigger TV for my husband, but the TV ended up being just a little too big for my TV stand. I decided we needed a new TV stand but all of the ones I liked were way too expensive. I knew I could make one myself that I liked better if I could just find the perfect dresser. A quick search on Craigslist and I found it! Only $40, too!
I took out the top 2 drawers and tossed them to make that the space for our media equipment. I carefully measured the inside of the space left by the drawers so I could get some plywood cut to measure at Lowes, which they so kindly did.
I had to get the wood cut in 3 separate pieces so that they would fit through the drawer openings. Thankfully, I am an awesome measure-er because they fit perfectly!
I painted the whole thing in chalk paint. We have a local shop that carries a brand called Old Town Paints, which is exactly like the popular Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, but cheaper and made in the US. I painted it in “Cast Iron” which is a really dark grey, almost black color. It’s equivilent to ASCP “Graphite” in color. I used ASCP in “Old White” in the insets on the drawers. I dark waxed it all and then used a satin finish over the top to make it hard and less likely to scratch. It turned out absolutely perfectly!
The whole thing cost me a total of $60 – $40 for the dresser and $20 for the paint!

@MsMeow: Oh, I agree! He’s been inflating my ego all morning. When I first brought home the dresser, he was very against this idea. He thought the dresser was too ugly and that it would look weird in our livingroom. The man has no vision, I tell you!
