So, I’m a bit of a “professional DJ,” in that I DJ on a pretty regular basis for money, but only in bars. The stuff I play is all stuff that (many) people enjoy dancing to at weddings, and I think I’d really have a great time DJing weddings. I know that I have “the skills” (and could rent any equipment the venue doesn’t have) but I have no idea how to get my foot in the door…
So, how did you guys find your wedding DJ? Anyone have any tips on how to get started DJing weddings (and Bar Mitzvahs!)?

Post an ad on craigslist. You’ll get responses. Make sure you listen to your clients, though — no one wants the DJ to go off on their own and try to be “awesome”.

Craigslist, Facebook, maybe post an ad in the local paper? We found our DJ through word of mouth, and that publicity will come with time!

We found our dj at a wedding expo. He also has a facebook page, flyers and other media platforms to promote his business.

We found ours at a wedding expo too. He was def. the best bang for our buck. He had a website, facebook, etc which I checked out before calling. It also really helped that they were given an A+ by the BBB.

We haven’t found our DJ yet but we met a prospect last night. I was referred by my sister’s wedding DJ whom she found on craigslist and was working out of a starbucks at the time (2008) but now has his own company with DJs who work for him.
He says he scouts DJs who play at clubs or other places who have experience and are very professional.
