I wasn’t sure where to put this but I decided on the waiting board because the bf hasn’t “officially” proposed. 🙂
The bf would really like to do a ‘traditional’ proposal and ‘do it right’ via bended knee and sparkly ring so I’m just here awaiting the joy… But when he does do his thing, I want to get him something too and give it to him at a later date. Like an engagement ring, but not.
So an engagement thing.
I’ve seen pocket watches as gifts before but he inherited one from his grandfather that just sits unused even though it works fine. He’s not big into any sort of jewelry either.
Any ideas from the hive on what is possibily appropriate for this gift?

Is he into regular wristwatches at all? I’ve heard of that as an engagement thing for guys before. I love the idea, but FI has dang expensive taste in watches, so he’s going to have to wait for his! 🙂

Keeping an eye on this, my bf hates watches but I want to get him something for an engagement present too…

I want to so something for him too! Originally I was thinking a watch, but i worry he won’t wear it. Then I dedided I wanted to do something like an event we would both enjoy while we are saving for the wedding. So I am going to get him redskins/ravens tickets.

Before I decided that I wanted an engagement ring, I had asked my boyfriend to get me an engagement kayak. Just get him something that you know he would love, but probably wouldn’t get for himself!

I talked to my bf about this also because I thought it would be a nice gesture, but he said he would feel stupid if I got him an engagement anything. He is very traditional, and doesn’t think guys should get anything. I only mention this because you say he wants to do a traditional proposal, and he may feel weird about it. obviously I am not saying there is anything wrong with this idea, just pointing out based on what you said that he may not be interested.

I got DH a dogtag as engagement gift. I had it engraved with a quote, our dating anniversary, and wedding date…Here’s a picture and the other side that he wears facing out is black

i really want to do this, too. i asked SO about it a while back, and he surprised me by saying that yes, he actually would like his own engagement ring, too. the problem is even though i’ve been on the lookout, nothing is really the right style! it’s not like he really wears jewlery anyway, but everything is almost too “manly” or too modern. i wanna find something kind of celtic looking and with a bit of color. :/

@BlondeMissMolly: That’s a good point. I hadn’t considered asking him directly if it would be alright to get him anything specifically for the engagement, but I will ask. I suspect you’re correct and he may just not be interested.
@misskoala: That’s very cute. That’s a bit like what I had first considered. 🙂
@NVACat: I think I will do this sort of thing if he doesn’t want an “engagement gift”.
Thank you for all the replies!

@Helium: My now fiance is a musician. I bought him a guitar that he had been dying for buuut, little ol’ me couldn’t hold out on the secret and gave it to him early. Lol. I already knew he had my ring at that time, and I just told him that I couldn’t hold out since I was afraid he’d buy it himself! 😀 get him something that he will use for years and that will make him think of you every time.

My fiancé already has a really nice wristwatch from his college graduation, and otherwise isn’t a jewelry guy, so I decided to pay for him to have a custom made suit to wear for our wedding and years to come! This gift is best if you’re not having a formal wedding/ the guys aren’t in tuxes. It’s going to cost between $750-$1000 to have it made, including one or two dress shirts (we live in Chicago, if that makes any difference). I figure it’s a great investment piece in his wardrobe, and he’s really excited about being able to choose every element of the suit.
Otherwise, I’d stick to his hobbies. What is he passionate about? My FI races motorcycles, but I quickly abandoned that idea since I didn’t want to buy him so random (but expensive!) motorcycle part that I wouldn’t be able to recognize if you hit me across the head with it, haha.

I’ve heard the same as TankGirl. I got my FI a watch 🙂

I think most men really appreciate the “engagement” flat screen TV. That is what my fiance got.
