We're cringing at the amount our wedding is going to cost, and looking to cut costs somewhere, so we're considering having champagne, a red wine, a white wine, beer, and a signature cocktail. What does everyone think about this? And what one cocktail can more or less satisfy everyone? Our tastes run towards the classics - both FI and I love martinis, and I love a good margarita. I'm afraid not many people like "strong" drinks like martinis, although they fit really well with the classic, elegant atmosphere we are going for.
So any ideas? Maybe a flavored martini? Our colors are blush pink and navy blue, and we are going with a literary theme if we get our venue (the Newberry Library.)
I'd love to hear everyone's experiences having a signature cocktail or attending weddings with them.
We're either going for a white sangria or *drumroll please*
HUNCH PUNCH.
Lol. Hunch punch at a black tie wedding? I say awesome.
Edit: I just saw your wedding date, and good sweet Lord you're on the ball, planning-wise.
I would avoid strong drinks altogether and go for a long cocktail (served in a hi-ball glass). They take longer to drink, therefore people don't get as drunk, and more importantly, go through less alcohol, meaning it is cheaper.
I know if I served drinks in martini glasses, my guests would knock them back so quickly and it would cost a fortune!
We did this and it was AWESOME. We had beer, white wine, red wine, and three cocktails. A gin and tonic, a blueberry passion fruit vodka sprite drink, and black raspberry peach martinis.
Everyone LOVED them. People kept coming up to me and complimenting me all night. The blueberry passion fizz was just vodka, blueberry-passion schnapps, and sprite, but the black raspberry peach thing was the most popular w/ the ladies and the gin/tonic was a hit amongst the guys. We also had a flat of coke and sprite in case anyone was too picky to like our choices.
Seriously, a huge hit.
We had a lemonade stand set up outside for our guests before the ceremony.
After the ceremony, the lemonade became "Happy Lemonade" for cocktail hour!
@ets4y8: tell me more about this black raspberry peach drink that was a hit for you. is it by chance pink??
i think the signature drink is a fantastic idea! i'm going to have the servers pass them on trays in the cocktail area as guests are entering in hopes that it will make the bar area less congested.
@50 - we've been dating for over five years, I'm so ready! LOL! Seriously, we'd both be getting married tomorrow, but we want to wait until we are financially independent, which means graduation. LOVE the hunch punch! I am not above something crazy quirky.
@ej, I don't know why, but I never thought about more than one... hmm, I almost wonder if we should do a "Bride's Cocktail" and a "Groom's Cocktail" - would that be cute?
@miss and laylabelle - yum to happy lemonade, although FI and I had a Smirnoff and Minute Maid lemonade experience one spring break that was not so good... nasty memories, haha!
Our signature drink is...wine. Hahahahaha. We're Italian with Italian food for dinner. What else would we go with? Hahahaha.
@Fiftyfootbride - I must know...what's hunch punch? Is it a southern thing?
@lily- I don't blame you! I'd be chomping at the bit too. :) We're waiting until we graduate too, but that's just next May!
@missomally- Hunch punch is a regular drink at frat parties in the South. (If not at other places!)
Hunch punch mainly is composed of...
Everclear or Vodka or some other grain alcohol (Or some other combination)
Fruit juice, Hawaiian Punch, or Kool-Aid
A crapload of fruit thrown in.
It got the name hunch punch, I believe, because that was the old-school term for humping. Lol! I know it goes at least as far back as Tulane in the 70s, because my parents had it in school!
It's a good idea, fun and it's a great way to save money, I agree.
We're doing the following signature drinks: sangria, mojitos, and then probably something blackberry and something peach. All in 4 huge 5 gallon glass drink dispensers.
Then we're also going to have very limited self-serve wine, champagne, one beer keg and some sodas. if anyone knows of a great peach cocktail or blackberry cocktail, let me know! Thanks! :)
@50 - I'm jealous, I'm so ready. I just put off a lot of my gen eds, aka Psych Stats. BLAH! I am graduating on time, though. I'm only in my second year. Wedding planning is more fun. ;)
@Jelly - we love wine too. That's certainly a must for us.
@lily- UGH STATS! I hated that with the fire of 1000 suns. I had to take a masters-level course in it, because the undergrad version was full, and I really needed it. The professor hadn't taught it in THIRTY years, and even the masters kids had no idea what was going on.
I've been thinking about this lately too.
Our colors are pinks and green....and found this post called pink your drink and fell in love.
The pink russian - is so good and deceptively strong but guys don't want to carry pink drinks, so I'm back to the drawing board
I'm looking for 2 signature alcoholic and 2 signature non-alchohlic.
We haven't finalized our signature drinks yet, but one will probably be a mojito!
We went to a wedding recently that had an awesome signature drink - not sure of the exact recipe, but it involved ginger beer and vodka. And it tasted like ginger ale. AWESOME!
We aren't serving ANY hard liquor and people will just have to deal. Beer and wine only.
We did briefly consider doing a signature drink. One that could be mixed with alcohol or not - like a lemonade - and making the non alcoholic version available as well.
The drink wasn't really pink, but if you used regular red raspberry schnapps, it would be!!! It was peach on top and the blackberry floated to the bottom. Gin and tonics are definitely good for the guys. But, we did have some men drinking our froofy drinks =]. We served them in those little 5oz clear plastic cups. Our place was no-glass, boo! that's why i have no pics of the drinks
@50, we called that Tea =]. And it got you d-runk.
We called our cocktails "something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue" then had "the groom's red" and "the bride's white" for drink titles.
Haha, we made our own Long Islands, without the Coke. So basically, vodka, tequila, a bit of rum, and MAYBE a splash of juice. Memories...
Ej, love the titles of your drinks.
I'm wondering if we should go with bride/groom or literary? His cat is named Gatsby, and my girl is Holly Golightly, so we could do something cute with that.
@ejs- At ATO, they'd call it Cooter Juice. :p
I've also heard it called Pig Swig.
Classy, lol
@lilfaith, a long island with cranberry instead of coke is a Long Beach. if you have peach vodka or schnapps, throw in a dash of that and you have a Peach Long Beach. A little ridiculously delicious. I usually end up starting trends at open bar weddings with my fancy cocktail. I used to work in a bar--go figs
@ejs - I think we've unintentionally made a Long Beach then! They're good, but I'd love to try a bar-quality one.
@ejs - I may have my own new signature drink - forget the wedding! That's sounds yummy!
@Querida: LOL! Wedding Bee cocktail hour everyone.
PS: where did you get your screenname? I know Querida is Spanish, but just wondering if you ever read Meg Cabot's Mediator series? Haha, I'm showing my dork side now, but I loved those books when I was 13/14.
hunch punch = jungle juice in Pennsylvania! except usually we go cheap and don't add the real fruit. haha.
ejs- I love love love your drink names! I was going to do the bride and grooms specialty drinks, but I may steal your idea! What was borrowed? And did you have a drink menu set up at the bar?
haha of course! i stole the idea off weddingbee....=]. Our "borrowed" was bud light. lame i know.
here is our cocktail menu:
@ejs - FI loved the "something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue" but said "what the heck do you use for something borrowed?" LOL!
We just use it as our scapegoat--beer! I didn't like the way it fit, but how is a drink "borrowed"? Weird i know
fiftyfootbride, I love some hunch punch! I would be really happy to see it at a wedding. :) It was the very first alcoholic beverage I ever had, lol
My signature drink: one bottle of Andre $3 champagne. Orange juice. Splash of grenadine, splash of sprite. Served in a plastic tumbler, preferably in a bubble bath.
Oh wait. You meant like a WEDDING signature drink?
I was thinking you could do something from a different culture or country for borrowed. Like a margarita could be 'borrowed' from mexico.
@Jacqi - great idea! I like that. I wanted to find a way to work margaritas in anyway. :)
@Jacq- Ack! How could I forget it being called jungle juice?!! Thanks for reminding me!
I think if we did hunch punch we'd water it down a bit and NOT NOT NOT use everclear. I don't want a bunch of barfers running around.
Ooh, I so found our blue drink - the Ritz Fizz, anyone had it? It's Amaretto, blue Cuaraco, champagne, and lime juice.
We're thinking about doing something fun like that, but just during the cocktail hour. Standard drinks after that.
I love the idea of a highball, but love martinis too. A conundrum.
@mermaid - We've struggled with choosing as well. We both love Manhattans and martinis, and FI is a scotch person, so we picked martinis since they just seemed to fit better with our venue -
