My dress was my mom's, so I can't help you with the budget of the dress, but with your $550, are you including alterations with that? If not, I spent probably about $500 on alterations alone. Now, I completely changed my mom's dress to fit me and my style, but still, the alterations of a wedding gown definitely aren't cheap unfortunately. I think you can definitely find a dress for $550, but the alterations are going to be more than the dress itself.
Good luck and hope you find what you're looking for!
My dress was only $650 and I know plenty of girls who have gotten their dresses for much cheaper---just let it roll off! As long as you can bargin hunt you should be golden :)
Totally! I'm amazed at some of the deals some of the ladies here have found! With some patience and bargaining, I'm sure you'll find something perfect!
My original budget was $500 but I was concerned I wouldn't find anything I liked for that amount. My budget now for dress + alterations is $1000 (although I'm willing to spend a little more if I fall in love). The biggest thing I'm going to try to do though is find a dress with a corset back so that the cost of alterations will be cut down!
I budgeted $700-$1000 but REALLY wanted one under $500. I found mine for $400 on sale, off the rack.
So don't let anyone tell you your dress is cheap/chintzy/crappy if you don't spend a gazillion dollars. It may not be couture, but you'll keep your dinero in the bank =]
Mine cost $600!!! You are not crazy, girl! I got so many compliments on my dress & it was perfect for me! You will definitely find something in your price range with no problem.
I plan on getting my dress from Aria dress. I love their simple, classy styles. And I REALLY love their prices. They also go all the way up to a size 26.The dress I want is below, and in the fabric I want, in a size 16 is only $455. In Silk Shantung its $265 or Duchess satin it would only be $205.
I'd really recommend checking out their site.

@ejs. Thank you! I am a photoshop nerd, so I love making IBs.
@LYBANA- You should def. check out Aria then. They are really simple dresses, but they have a wide variety of styles.
if there is a running of the brides anywhere near you, try that (sponsored by filenes basement) i went there in NYC this past february and found my dress! i had toyed with a few dresses some of which were originally 7000+ (at the event they were reduced to 799!) the dress i got was around 2000 and it was at the event for $249! you cant go wrong.
i didnt actually have a dress budget in place before going to the event. but i must say, i just went to have fun and get the expereince and try on a billion dresses. there were TONS (most were around size 10 and up) but there were also smaller and larger sizes too. i highly, highly recommend it! and it was a blast :) see if they do that anywhere near you!
Hi,
Seriously, look at www.keepmeinstitches.biz I bought a gorgeous/well made MOB gown there (Queen size) for $219.00 plus shipping. I went to a local drycleaner/seamstress and had her take my measurements -so I knew the'd be correct, and then called customer service, bc I only had 2 months til the wedding. Based on my measurements they told me what size to order, and I received it in the right size. I had been leary of ordering online, but when I saw that they have a "brick & mortar" store in Scottsdale, PA it made me have the courage to order. I was worried about the quality-but a woman that did minor alterations makes wedding gowns and without knowing what I paid for the gown, she said is was very high quality. I don't know what size you are, but I would suggest you get measured by someone who is a seamstress. Now it looks like you can enter your measurements at this website and you will find what size to order. Their simpler wedding gowns start at only $99.00!!! I would suggest if you need alterations, to go to a drycleaner seamstress-unlless the gown is very complicated-you will pay much less that way! Good luck and keep us posted. I was an extremely happy customer! (My daughter's photographer & friend said I should just wear the gown everywhere!) hee hee
You are not crazy!! My dress was $550 and I picked it because I loved it not because of the price. What area of the country are you located in?
Side note: each dress will state what size it comes in, but it is not street dress size, however, there is a measurement chart, and if you have any doubts, call customer service and they will definitely help you to pick the right size!
if you are willing to take a road trip, there's a warehouse in toronto that has all the previous years of dresses (like, prior 2007) and i believe they're all for $299. my aunt got hers there, and she loved it!
I bought my dress for $550 brand new, not even off the rack (it was ordered for me) from DBs. Granted DBs doesn't have the best reputation, I had a wonderful experience there. Alterations are a different story but they only cost me $120 with an outside seamstress. So brand new dress = $670! My budget was $1000 and i was SO happy to be very much under!
It's totally possible to find an inexpensive dress that you'll love!
I budgeted $2000 for my dress, and ended up finding my dream dress on ebay for $300. Ignore the naysayers, there are plenty of dresses out there! Look for quality designer dresses on auction sites from past seasons (like 2008/2009). They will be marked down significantly since they aren't THIS year's dress, but they are still quality and will make you look beautiful. (You might want to go to a dress boutique and try on several different designers so you know which one fits your body best...not all designers use the same dress form, so some dresses look better on full figured girls than others!)
I have plenty of friends who found dresses in that price range. Try Alfred Angelo and Casablanca. Pretty and reasonably priced! I also know several people who got dresses (including accessories) at David's (they hit the $99 dress sale).
You might also try preownedweddingdresses.com if you have your heart set on a certain style/designer that is out of your price range. I have a friend who got dresses there and actually MADE money selling them back afterward!
I budgeted $1,000 for my wedding dress and I went from bridal store to bridal store trying to find the "perfect" dress and I was starting to feel like it wasn't out there and I would soon have to settle with a dress that I thought was just OK but one day my mom and I went into this small boutique not having high hopes and there it was all the way in the back of the store just hanging there in only one size. I decided to try it on and there was my moment :)
And the big surprise was when I looked at the price tag only $250!!!! I couldn't have been happier. My advice is you just have to keep looking until you find the one in your price range, Believe me, It's out there :) GOOD LUCK!!!
You can do it! Also consider bridesmaids dresses that come in ivory/white. I went the BM dress route because all "real" wedding dresses were too formal for our cocktail party wedding, and along with that came a serious reduction in price! I bought a formal bridesmaids gown in ivory that came out to just over $300 (including the upcharge for a plus size AND the stupid fee the designer charged for getting it in ivory). You have lots of options!
I definitely think it can be done! Just make sure you budget enough for alterations. Even if it fits perfect off the rack, you still may need to have it hemmed and bustled.
You're most definitely not crazy! I found my dress for $300 brand new...it was close to $1G in the store.
Have you found a dress that you love yet? If so, search on www.plussizebridal.com
I am budgeting for 2500 but I am really really hoping for less than 2K. I am also a plus sized girl.
My first dress that I bought and exchanged was only $300 at David's Bridal. The one I exchanged it for (an am wearing) was $600. Inexpensive beautiful dresses are out there!
You can definitely find a beautiful dress in that price range. I'm also a full plus size gal and I got my dress for $370 on sale. It was originally $850. My alterations cost about $160 (I added sleeves and had to take about 5 1/2 inches off the length beings I'm a shortie), so the total dress was about $530!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL OF YOUR INCOURAGEMENT ... BEES ARE GREAT!
The dress I'm trying on today (I'm plus-sized also) is only $600. I also tried on dresses at David's Bridal and I don't think a single dress I tried on was more than $700 or so.
@LYBYANA Definately not crazy! I am a plus size girl and i was worried it was going to cost so much more because of it but i ended up finding one off the rack for $519 and normalls it runs $1000! A website i was looking at before i bought mine was PS Bridal. They have dresses for low prices SPECIFICALLY for plus size brides! I went into a boutique about a dress i was interested at first, and they quoted me around 900+ for my dress, and i went on that website and got quoted $639!! Definately check them out. They are legit and talk with you over the phone which is really nice.

When talking to a few friends of mine the topic of wedding dress pirces came up and I was told that I was crazy to even think that I could find anything of quality for my price range. Now I am a FULL plus size gal so of course the range of dresses is a little smaller so because of that and all that excess material prices are way out there. We are getting married on a tight budget and I only have 550$ to spend on my dress and accessories (my sister is lending me her veil, its my borrowed)
just out of curriosity how much are you all budgeting on your wedding dress?????
