LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the idea! It'll just be a challenge to keep the icecream cool.
FI have been debating this one for months now. We both want it but it will mean moving our freezer to our site and I am not sure whether it is worth the effort. Even if it is only three blocks. So on the fence on this one!
haha, I thought of that. But it will be inside and in a country club so I am sure they can accomodate some Ice cream hehe
my parents just went to a wedding where there was a make your own sundae bar and they loved it!!!
How did they serve the icecream? was it already scooped or did they have someone scoop it?
I LOVE the idea of an ice cream bar.
I wish we could do this for our wedding. My family actually owns an ice cream shop in NC that has been open for over 100 years. Unfortunately I live in FL, so there is no easy way to get ice cream shipped for our wedding.
Good luck!
lol I live in Florida also. Would your parents have any ideas on the best way to serve it for an inside wedding of 150. I was just gonna get tubs of ice cream from the store and set them out on the tables to be self serve or have a staffmember scoop.
If I ever go to a wedding with an ice cream bar it will automatically be the best wedding ever. Ah, I wish it was in our budget :( But I think it sounds great!
just an FYI if you do use dry ice in a cooler to get it there the ice cream will be HARD to scoop if it directly resting on top of the dry ice! ( I used to volunteer for my son's school ice cream social every year that's why I know this )
I went to a wedding with one. It was great. They had an attendent scopping the ice cream, hot fudge, caramel etc and then you could put the rest of the toppings on yourself.
It wsa a lot of fun.
I would think that the best way to keep the ice cream cold is dry ice. Maybe you could have a container that would hold the dry ice and you could put the ice cream on top...
A ice cream cart would be super awesome, but I'm sure that is very expensive.
If you do this, I would suggest getting a catering staff member dedicated to the scooping task. Otherwise, it will probably become messy and gross pretty quickly. Or you could do a soft serve machine? Check with your party rentals place and see what they have!
WOW that looks amazing!! Great idea - I'd be inclined to see if you can get a soft serve machine, will be much easier than guests scooping it and messing the beautiful labels and general prettyness!
My sister had one at her wedding - it was their splurge. They had the ice cream set out in bowls by the staff ahead of time - so no scooping in front of the guests. They also had a tub of "jack and jill" novelties like drumsticks, ice cream sandwiches, etc.
I love ice cream just as much as the next person, and at my wedding its actually included as part of the dessert hour (with fresh waffles!!) but I don't know that I'd splurge for an extra if it wasn't included.
I LOVE this idea! There will be a lot of kids at my wedding so this will be fun for them!
Um.. YUM.
I'm pretty sure the way to do it is to have an attendant from the caterer with the bar. I know someone who worked in a hotel for years and this was one of the things they did for weddings, sounds like it usually worked that way.
Did they have a problem with the ice cream melting in the bowls or making a big mess?
We are doing this. Ice cream comes with the wedding cake at our venue. I had to pay a little to have an attendant stand there to prevent the ice cream from melting, but I get to bring whatever toppings I would like. I'm doing this rather than favors. We're just doing vanilla ice cream, but I think everyone will find a way to dress it up to make it their favorite.
I had a make your own sundae/ ice cream float at my wedding and it was a hit! We had choice of chocolate or vanilla and an attendant who scooped the ice cream. they had the ice cream in chiller tubs of some sort. There were then a dozen different toppings that you could put on. We also had chocolate chip cookies and brownies. It was a lot of fun and a great way to end a hot summer day.
Our venue charged an additonal $3 per person for the sundae bar. They had every topping you could think of...M&M's, reeces, sweedish fish etc.
They had two large tubs of ice cream (vanilla and chocolate) and our guests scooped it them selves.....Worked out fine!!! People could take as much or as little as they wanted. We were married in July, so it was hott out and this was just a perfect end to a night.
We are still receiving rave reviews of envy!!!
I wish we could have an ice cream bar!! I would be all over that. LOL! I would do it if we could. You'd just have to make sure the ice cream stayed cold.
People were scooping it out and eating it so fast, there was no time for it to melt, even in 78 degree weather.
I think they went through 4 big tubs.
I too though melting would be an issue, but it wasn't.
Yea, I was at a wedding where they had this. I didn't have any but it was definitely a hit!! They had the ice cream in a HUGE (like 6 ft wide, 2 ft high) bowl that looked like it had been frozen with ice on the outside of it so that the ice, once it melted didn't make the ice cream all watery and runny. I hope that made sense!!
Anyways, ask your venue about doing it and I'm sure they can.
@litljen84: They didn't have a melting issue until it got a bit later. The novelties were on ice though. The actual ice cream suffered after half hour maybe.
I know my sis's photographer took pictures, I can see if she has any that I can post if you're interested.
One of the weddings that FI and I went to had a sundae bar. It was AMAZING! My FI made himself sick with how much he ate (not sure if that's a pro or a con). I thought it was awesome though.
I did it at mine but my venue coordinated it all. My DH and I love ice cream and aren't big fans of cake so it worked out well for us. Everyone LOVED it!
I did an ice cream sundae bar at my wedding and it was a hit! we rented a soft serve machine for about $75 and then bought all the fixin's!! here's some pics...

I just saw this idea of an Ice cream bar online. Has anyone done this?
My fiance LOVES ice cream so I was thinking of doing this instead of a grooms cake.
What do you all think???????????????????????
