if you're expecting lots of checks (we didn't register so we got a lot in cash) make sure it's secure - ie not easy for people to sneak cards, etc out. not saying your guests will do that but wait staff, etc might and it's not worth the risk.
we used a sealed box, wrapped like a gift, with a bow that had a slit for inserting the cards. only 1 way in and it wasn't easy to get cards out without jiggling it, etc by which point it would be obvious to bystanders that something was going on.
just something to think about.
Hhhhmmmm - I was going to use a basket until now. That's a good point. Now, I need a box.

What are you all thinking of using to hold the cards/checks you get at your reception? I was thinking about using a birdcage but haven't found one I loved yet and wanted to also see what other options I could think of...
