are you close enough to your wedding venue that you could go visit? we got married at a b&b and i know my parents are going to gift us a weekend there for our anniversary, and my brother always goes to the restaurant that he got married at for his.
@artbee: Thanks for the suggestion! Unfortunately, where we had our reception isn't the type of place we can return to visit. But, great idea!
The traditional first anniversary gift is paper, which is great for newlyweds on a budget!
I am giving my husband a "newlywed map" similar to the one blogged about here: http://jordanferney.blogspot.com/2009/06/newlywed-map.html
The whole project cost me about $20.
I will also try to bake a smaller version of our wedding cake, since we didn't freeze any and our baker didn't offer an anniversary cake as part of our package.
@HannahT: Thank you for mentioning the cake! I can't believe I forgot about that! One of the cool things about our baker is, shortly before your first anniversary, they send you a certificate for a free anniversary cake. They replicate your cake - same flavor, icing and decoration style - just smaller! I'm so glad you reminded me - now I don't have to worry about dessert! Maybe we can eat that while we watch the wedding video! I also LOVE the map idea!
Can you make him a collage of photos and memories (movie tickets, etc) from your first year of marriage?
My sister does photo books for important trips and events. I'm making one of our wedding photos and familymoon photos and will make one of our first year of marriage too!
Why not do that also? Make an album, coffee table type one, of all the amazing milestones?
I like having a tangible, easily-accessible book of memories that you can easily pick up and use to reminisce. It's so fun at her house to see their family memory books of their trip to this island or that place. Such a good idea I thought I'd borrow hers!

Help! I need ideas! My husband and I are 3 weeks away from celebrating our first anniversary... yikes! We have already decided to go out to dinner that night and have made reservations at a nice restaurant that both of us have been wanting to try. We have some very clear financial goals that we are working on right now so have been watching our finances very closely lately. We have been tossing around the idea of no presents or giving each other a present but with a $20 limit. Does anyone have any ideas of special things we can do to celebrate or a present I could give him that will be affordable but meaningful? I've already thought of watching our wedding DVD and I might make him breakfast in bed that morning. Any other ideas? Thanks in advance!
