My FI turns 33 in 2 weeks. I’m going to cook him his favorite fancy-ish meal and buy his favorite cake. It’ll be a surprise for him to come home to on a random day. I think we went out to dinner on his 30th. We’re not very exciting, are we? : P

I’m commenting again because FI had his 26th birthday out of town. We went on a weekend trip, and we stayed at a bed and breakfast. I had them make him a really nice cake. I bought him an Xbox360 and pasted a picture of one inside a small box since I couldn’t exactly wrap up the Xbox and take it on our trip.

hazyleyedbeauty:  Is he a sports fan? Does he have a favorite sport? Will there be a game when you are in Boston?  Is he a golfer? Would he love to golf on one of the local courses?

I think the best present is something he would enjoy, not necessarily what we think would be a creative idea.

hazyleyedbeauty:  I did “30 years of memories” for DH. It was a sort of spin-off of something I found on Pinterest. I contacted all of his closest friends, coworkers and family. I even hunted down childhood friends he had not spoke with in years. Everyone I could think of, and figured the more, the merrier. It took me about 4 weeks to compile it all. I sent them emails, Facebook messages, had other family members pass the messages along. I simply asked for their favorite memories with DH in any format they’d like (email, word document, traditional snail-mail letter). It could be very long, really short and one or ten memories… Whatever they could come up with. Pictures were even better! Of course, it had to be kept a secret.

The variety of stuff I got was amazingggg! I than packed them all up in individual air-mail envelopes and gave them to DH at his birthday dinner. I tried to keep them in chronological order (as well aspossible, anyway). I would put one in a single envelope, and add multiples in other if they were from the same time period. In the very last envelope (the 30th one), it was a “memory yet to be made” and had plane tickets and hotel itinerary for a trip to New Orleans (where he had been wanting to go for a while). I got the airmail envelope kit (with all of the accessories to assemble) from an etsy store.

He loved it and cried quite a bit reading all of the memories. It was fun to watch/photograph him read each envelope and laugh, reminisce as he told me about each story and even get really touched by some. He still says to this day it was the most thoughtful gift that anyone has given him.
