I would not think it’s weird.  It could be your “theme” and you can tie it in with little signs with picknick theme and all that good stuff.  It can be fun!

Check with your venue first. A lot of them wont let food in thats not from a caterer.

@ashleymorrall:  Jamie Oliver did a program on a really easy wedding menu that you could do yourself.  I am trying to find the episode for you now, but am not having muc luck.  The menu was something along the lines of:

Cured meats and cheese platters with salads

Baked herbed-stuffed salmon

A summer fruit dessert

EDIT: Found it! http://www.ovguide.com/tv_episode/olivers-twist-season-1-episode-20-wedding-331913#

It’s a very rustic menu which is designed for a more casual atmosphere.

I think a picnic theme for the meal is awesome. You could do some simple decorations to go with it. Your menu of bbq and salads would be easy to prepare ahead of time too. For the mess issue, what about looking for those disposable bibs you sometimes get at seafood or bbq places, and decorating them to match your wedding. I think that one of those with the rhinestone stickers spelling out bride would make a cute option and make eating easier for you.
