West Elm is contemporary and really affordable for furniture. They're in Lincoln Park.

I wasn't going to suggest Jayson Home, but they are high end...it's fun to window show there. However, I went to their site and they are having a 50% off floor model sale. Buying high end furniture at a discount might be more econimical than buying cheap stuff in that you won't have to replace the better quality items.
Good places to start: Roy's in Lincoln Park, Domicile Furniture (has an outlet by Old Orchard), Amphora (unusual pieces, but priced fairly) in Park Ridge, Nadeau in Ravenswood. I don't know if any of these places have financing.
You could also check Dania, although they are up in Northbrook (and other suburban locations: http://www.daniafurniture.com/location)
If you like any of the Rowe sofas/chairs, there is a great furniture store on Lincoln (near the Lincoln/Damen/Irving Park intersection) that we really liked. It doesn't look like anything much from the outside but they do have some great stuff. Kevin is able to hook you up with almost anything custom you would want. We got a sectional for 50% off and were able to get it in less than 6 weeks. I would totally recommend checking them out.
@JamieinMN: There is one but its a bit of a drive and I'm not sure since Ikea furniture might make our place seems like we'll back in college lol, but I'll check it out anyhow!
@josephine90:I just received my catalog yesterday and they have some really nice looking couches...NOT college-like at all! ;-)
Just got the sofa from Roy's! Will be here in 6 to 8 weeks..looking for a bed next!!(sleeping on aerobed for now). Any ideas??

We are getting our first place together in an apartment downtown. We'll looking for a good quality modern contemporary styles that would not break the bank.It would be great if they offer financing plans and delivery. Any suggestions?
