Hey there crafty girls! I’m hoping someone can help me.
I purchased some hats for my out of town bags for my wedding in Aruba. These are for the ladies. They’re really cute packable straw hats but I really don’t like the leather band. Its easy to remove and I’d like to do something more festive / tropical with the hat.
Our colors are pink and orange. I’m so not creative and not too much of a DIYer. Today I went to the craft store looking for some pretty silk flowers I could put on the hat but they were so bad – even the silk ones seem plasticy. I’ve seen really pretty silk ‘hair flowers’ on etsy but they are really expensive $18-30 for really pretty ones. Then I looked at the ribbon / bead section to try to find a pretty beaded trim to put in place of the band – no luck. Finally, I went to the jewelry section and found these round disc mother of pearl shell beads that might have been pretty but it would have cost me like $8 per hat.
I’m kind of hoping to come up wtih a good plan and then offering the task to my mom who is desperate to get her hands on my wedding. Unfortunately our tastes are SO different and she’s not crafty either so I need something simple with very specific instruction. I like ‘clean and modern’. Nothing to frou-frou.
Do you think this would be worth doing or do you think I should just leave them as is? To me that leather band just seems wrong for Aruba…

Something that popped in my head is maybe getting some pink ribbon and some orange ribbon and making a single braid with them and replacing the leather with the braid and then may a nice little bow on one side. It’s simple enough to go with everyones tastes but has your colors and personal touch in it.

What about a pink/orange ribbon with a large pink/orange tropical flower (maybe a hibiscus!)?

I love putting the flower on the side of them with the ribbon around them…. you may also be able to stamp something on them or get a stencil and paint on them.

Thanks so much for the input! I did some more searching on etsy and found someone that might have more affordable silk flowers. I think I’ll a least order a sample. And I like the ribbon idea! Definitely more affordable than the beads I was considering. =) I want to make sure each one is a little different.

Oh! I’m not sure if I’d put a silk hibiscus on there… it might get a little cheesy. Immediately when I read that I thought of these:
Or a crazy old RV tourist lady with a fanny pack.
I suggest getting a ribbon with a tropical pattern or some fabric with a tropical pattern and just making a ribbon to go where the leather is. Less is more!
If you are set on having a flower on it, maybe something like this from etsy, you get 2 for five and I bet they would put them on a pin for you!

I think some kind of pink or orange tropical flower would look fabulous!! You can find really cheap yet pretty silk flowers anywhere!

Too funny! I think I need a shirt like that!
My first inspiration was this seller:
I was hoping to find something like that but smaller (and less expensive). But I’m afraid a less expensive flower will just end up looking cheap.

I think a simple ribbon would be best; you don’t want to add to much to a visor, they are casual headwear anyways so adding too much embellishment would really weigh it down. I do like the idea of stamping or stenciling on a design though something simple and tropical, maybe a single hibiscus or plueria in pink or orange stamped onto the visor. If you wanted to make them special for the guests to receive, why couldn’t you put something on the underside of the visor? You could put the date or the guests name and location. So the guests would know you put time and thought into their gift but the visor wouldn’t look too overdone.

Hey cjaruba…I think we’ve met on the aruba sites! Cute visors…for an idea I was thinking maybe a simple thin ribbon to replace the leather strap, to incorporate your colors. I think the flower thing might too big. Michaels or any craft store have tons of ribbon selection with your color too. I know they have printed ribbons with flowers on them in your color, i just think it would be cheaper and easier.
