I would just google "evening gown" and see what comes up :)
You could always get something custom made as well. My experience with going the custom route has been great.
Check out the Outnet.com for really beautiful, high end gowns on serious clearance. I actually posted a thread about a Lanvin gown on sale there yesterday - it was ivory and beautiful.
@AdriannaJean: I second the suggestion of Jovani, a lot of celebs actually have worn their stuff on the red carpet!
You may have come across Sue Wong already in your searches, but if not, you may want to check her dresses out. Usually Bloomingdales, Neiman, Nordstrom, Saks will have some, but you can see additional styles on sites like MissesDressy or the Sue Wong Facebook page.
ideeli.com and those types of sites will sometimes have ball gowns. I have about a dozen or so that I check daily.
On the more bridal end of things, i like elegant dresses like Jenny Packham or Lela Rose... anybody know of any more affordable lines that imitate these styles?
Tksjewelry just mentioned this, but ideeli.com has a set of bridal (but I think very much the evening gown side of bridal, in a good way!) stuff up right now, if you want to check that out!
I agree with PPs - Neimans and Saks will be your best bets for designer gowns
I remember finding this thread helpful when I was looking for a flowy dress for my wedding: http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/help-me-find-a-low-budget-flowydreamy-dress-designer - check out some of the links and recommended designers.
I love Rachel Gilbert designs, but they are hard to find in the US. Super glamorous though and not crazy expensive.

I had the same dress search criteria, and was looking for something not bridal. Have you looked at the Nordstrom wedding dress shop? I tried on a couple of Tadashi Shoji dresses that were stunning.
I ended up buying a Nicole Miller dress, which is a beautiful silk strapless sheath. It's very simple but sexy. Check out her dresses, I think they will fit your criteria perfectly! And they're affordable, with many under $1k, but some more elaborate gowns at much higher price points too.

I have perused the designer gown sections of upscale department stores like Saks, Bloomingdales, etc...
I wouldn't mind if it were ivory, but other soft colors would be ok as well. I don't mind if it looks like a little like a wedding dresses... but not strapless, and no ball gown type or mermaid skirts.
My ideal dress would be something that someone might also wear to a black tie event, or the oscars ;-). That's what I mean when i say not so typically "bridal".
Does anyone know bridal designers who specialize in these type of dresses?
