Depends.

If he broke up with me, I’d keep it. If I broke up with him, I’d give it back. And, IMO, if one party cheats, they forefit the ring, no matter who officially breaks up with who.

I would give it back regardless – WHY WOULD I WANT TO KEEP IT?

@nikix:  I’d keep it, but then I’m the one who wrote the check for it :P. (I worte the check because I had the savings for it while he gets paid more regularly than I do, so he’s paying my share of the rent equivalent to it’s price)

Before marriage, I would return it.

I wouldn’t return it now that we’re married.

Heck no! If we ever decided to end things, I’m liquidating it to pay off my student loans.

Before marriage, I’d probably return it since I think there can be legal issues with keeping it (it can be considered a conditional gift). However, I’m currently getting divorced and I kept (and sold) my ring because I considered it my property and I doubt he’d want it for anything. If it was a family ring, I’d probably have given it back regardless.

Yes it’s mine but I guess I wouldn’t care for the money aspect of it.  I dont’ know maybe I just sound stupid because it was a bit pricey – but for some reason I feel like if we were to divorce I just wouldn’t want to do that – UNLESS he cheated – if he cheated then ya I would sell it and buy something nice for myself.  If the divorce happened for some other reasons (say – I initiated it) then he could definitely keep it.

All in all I wouldn’t want it – why? so it could remind me of the relationship? no thanks

During the engagement I probabaly would, because I think I would need to in order to move on.

Now that we are married, if he wants it back he can pry it out of my cold dead hands.
