I choose a purse only because I'm super clumsy, and if I ever bought designer shoes or clothing item, I'd be worried about ruining it in some way.  It's just too likely to happen.

i would buy a designer purse. Those usually last forever (i would be a classic style, not too trendy looking) and i can pass it down to someone else after i'm done with it and it would be considered "vintage" in about a decade anyway!

no one else has an opinion?

i agree that a handbag will always be in style and would last the longest... hmmm

the reason i'm asking is that we've decided on NYC for our honeymoon, and even though it's 1.5 years away i am going to start saving now for one major splurge!

An amazing purse or piece of jewelry -- something I couldn't wear out too easily (as would be the case with shoes).

I'll have to go with a pair of shoes. I can't justify a handbag (I avoid carrying them around whenever possible...they make me feel like a pack horse) and clothes have shorter lives.

LOUBOUTINS! I was gonna splurge on a pair for my wedding shoes (there is a post floating around out there with a pic of the Louboutin blue petal shoes - To. Die. For.) but I realized that I really really don't want to deal with a 4-inch heel on my wedding day. I might not even make it down that aisle in heels that high.

I'm with the majority thus far - it's purse/handbag all the way - I need a good sturdy one and I love every "designer" one I've had... of course, I usually get them at TJ MAXX or an outlet

Well, I do own a *few* designer items, and they are ALL PURSES! Here's why:

Clothing: I wear stuff out easily, I work in a manufacturing job, and I come in contact with lots of nasty chemicals. I simply have no place to wear expensive designer clothes. I'm thinking Chanel, D&G, etc. Not JCrew, BR, Limited, Big Star, you get my drift

Shoes: um, I am 5'11" people. I have no need for fancy, tall Christian Louboutins. Did I mention my engineering job? How unpractical! It's not a feasible choice for me.

Purses: YES PLEASE! I can wear them to work and everywhere I go. I don't need a *ton* of purses but I like a handful of nice ones. They spruce up my whole outfit!

Depending on how big my "splurge" could be I'd be content to go with jewelry too =]

HA @ejs - I'm 5'3" which means I need to wear two pairs of Louboutins on top of one another to reach your regular height.

Wow I feel really short now.

Now that you mention it, though, I would love to rock some sort of Dior couture dress. I also love jewelry. Oh man this is one of those posts that is going to send me straight to the internet to browse for things I can't afford...

SHOES. I've just never cared so much about handbags, although I agree that if I were going to really splurge on one thing only, they'd be the more practical choice.

Definitely Louboutins... I've already decided that I am getting a pair for my wedding.

I already have 3 coaches (One was a gift and the other two were amazing prices)  and I can justify them because they are all going to last me forever...my shoes probably won't have the same lifetime as my purses.

I'm not a Kelly or Birkin girl, but I have planned on purchasing a Bolide or 25cm (baby) Birkin at some point- saved up the money for it, then wussed out :P Ended up spending the money doing unnecessary home decor improvements (apparently in my mind this is more reasonable hah). Lotta money to pay for a bag, even if it is a gorgeous bag that will last forever ;D Not a shoe girl, I mean I've seen some I like, but I just can't justify spending over $200 on something you walk on, aside from my cowboy boots, which last forever and I love! I WRECK shoes heh. Big clothing person, but even though I pick items that are high quality, I don't spend absurd amounts.

I would definitely go with the handbag. I love getting handbags and I have quite a few desinger handbags. I am not that big into shoes or clothing but a classic handbag is great and lasts forever.

I have a couple designer bags, and a pair of Manolo's ... and I would LOVE to buy another pair of Manolo's ... seriously the most comfortable shoes EVER! I need another pair because my red, patent leather mary-janes, although quickly becoming my trademark, do not always go with everything, so I would like another color!

I have a TON of designer bags so I would go with SHOESSSS! I'm hard on my shoes that's why I try not to spend too much on them. I was just unpacking my adorable wedding shoes the other day and noticed that the heels are covered in dried mud *SNORT* it wasn't even raining out. HARD On my SHOES!

I LOVE my wedding shoes, check them out..

So many options! I love all my Tiffany Jewelry, but since you have a shiny ring on your finger you might not have eyes for anything else! I guess for me, when in doubt, go with a good handbag. Good ones are classic and leather (if you take care of it) lasts forever. All my purses are stored in their cover bags on the top shelves of my closet (away from the air vents!) and they're (mostly) in perfect condition.

If it's cold where you live, you could always get an awesome winter jacket. That's the first item of clothing people see when they encounter you, so it could make an excellent impression to have a super classic and stylish one from a good designer's second tier brands (500-$1000 probably won't buy you a top tier coat) like Just Cavalli by Roberto Cavalli or Marc by Marc Jacobs. Some Burberry trenches are around that price range, if you get lucky and catch them at the right time. Just throwing that out there.

Since I already have some designer purses my new one thing I'd like to have would be a great pair of designer shoes. The kind that you can wear with several outfits and are classic and never get old.

A Cartier Watch or Louboutin heels.  More likely go with the watch because shoes suffer too much wear and tear to justify the cost.

I would really love a classic Chanel handbag. I absolutely know I'd never wear really fancy shoes often enough to enjoy them properly.

If watches count, and I could have any one, and I LOVE watches, I'd have a Patek Phillipe!if you could buy one designer item (NOT for your wedding)... : wedding Patekphilippe4513

I voted handbag, but if it were me, in a fantasy world, I would buy a designer couch. I know, I know....designer couch??!?! I don't even know who the famous furniture designers are, but I know that if money was no object, I wouldn't hesitate to spend 25 grand on something awesome for my house!

Normally I'd say buy one piece of each! Buy a nice pair of shoes, a nice dress and a handbag. But since it looks like you're only planning to purchase one item, I vote for a handbag. A nice, designer handbag can make your outfit. And, buy leather pleaaase! no cheesy cloth bags with G's all over. Some of my favorite designers that I totally recommend are:

Chloe, Balenciaga, Jimmy Choo,  LV (the classic styles), Gucci (leather ONLY- the fabric ones tend to get ruined and dirty VERY fast), Miu Miu, Marc Jacobs and Yves Saint Laurent.

And if you're in NY, I recommend going to Bergdorf Goodman. They carry the best collections and the costumer service is the best you'll ever get.

    Good luck!!!
