I design software and help manage online communities for a living. My job is a combination of journalism and software, two of my life interests (I am pretty geeky, in case you haven't figured that one out haha).
If I didn't do what I do now, I would probably want to:
I would probably go to nursing school. If not that something with computers not sure, maybe graphic designer, software designer...I just LOVE computers and wish I could do more with them.
I'm in marketing...blech. It's purely a means to an end right now. I would love to, and plan to, get into event planning down the road. Maybe one day I can help some Bees out with their weddings! I also LOVE interior design so that would be great to do as well.
I've always dreamed of being involved in forensic science and/or investigations. But I'm horrible with math and mediocre with science so I'm not sure that would work out. ;)
Though I love my job, I sometimes fantasize about being in a more creative field. I'd love to be an anthropologist or a craftsperson... but sometimes I just fantasize about being a barista and doing a job where I interact with people on a casual basis all day (and I don't even drink coffee!).
I'm currently a law school admissions counselor: if you decide to go ahead with law school call me, Mr. Bee!
I would love to plan weddings or work on Capitol Hill again, but I still don't know what I want to "bee" when I grow up!
I like my job, but if money were not an option, I would be in dance classes all day (ballet, jazz, hiphop & tap) That would be my DREAM which is slowly sucking away as I get older and less limber!
Oh Mr. Bee- you do not want to go to law school. Why would you want to torture yourself for 3 years? (Semi-kidding)
I like law, but if I had to choose something else I would be a newspaper reporter because that was my first true passion, a librarian, or a teacher because I love kids and think I could get them to have fun and learn at the same time.
I love marketing and communications but often wish I was working in either fashion or publishing instead of software.
I work in Human Resources, but have come to realize with the job market as it is, I will probably need to accept whatever comes at me when I move.
If I had my way, I would either be in journalism or go to law school, so I guess we have similar dreams, Mr Bee!
Latte - I'm in HR too ... I really thought it was what I was going to want to do, but it's definitely not! I would love to own and run a pre-school/day care program. I am seriously considering going back to school within the next few years.
I love psychology and therapy, but I thought about wedding planning for a long time. I'm getting to fulfill some of those dreams now, probably why I have way too many ideas.
I would be a party planner :) I've always wanted to do it... you know I still might.
I want to work with dogs. Not really sure what I would do exactly (groomer, trainer etc) but I'm working on it :-)
I'm currently in law school... (oh Mr. Bee... are you absolutely sure you want to be here?
)
But if I could do something different... I would go toward writing, photography, or teaching English or French. I guess I would want to do something more creative.
I'm a lawyer. For all the law school hopefuls, keep an eye on the lawyer job market ... it's pretty bad right now.
As an alternative, I'd like to be (in order of preference) a Senator, host the Today Show, work on Capitol Hill (I suppose I'm qualified now, but the loans say no), or edit non-fiction.
I wish I had stuck with my design curriculum in college (switched majors pretty late in the game)....I would have turned out to be an industrial designer.
I am working as an office coordinator right now... definitely not a lifelong dream! Next year I will go back to school to get my degree for teaching... can't wait!
Here's to the Today Show! Wouldn't that be nice??
I'm in law school and doubt I will always be an attorney. Someday, I would love to own or manage a coffee shop/bookstore. I always imagine Meg Ryan in You've Got Mail (pre-closing of her store). I'd love a job where I could meet people, relax, and make (most) people happy! Instead, I'm heading straight into deadlines and competitiveness. Ah well!
tbrooke and Miss Marshmallow, I'm also a law student who wishes I was going into something more creative and relaxed! Although for me, the trainwreck that is the legal profession right now could be a blessing in disguise, because I'm seriously thinking about not practicing (fortunately, my loans are minimal).
If I REALLY had my druthers, I'd be a host on The Travel Channel. I'd really like to try my hand at wedding photography, too. But honestly, anything that offers a lot of vacation would be fine with me...I don't mind working hard when I'm working, but I've caught a serious travel bug and two weeks a year is NOT enough.
I am a licensed attorney, but not exactly sure what I want to do with my life. I lost my job on Tueday which means the world is my oyster! (Minus the excessive student loan debt). These are the days when I am really trying to figure out what my future will hold! And like others, part of me thinks it may not involve practicing law. Stay tuned! :)
well, there is still hope, minus 50k of debt. LOL Guess we need to get started on a couple things:
1) law support group (jk)
2) career counseling!!!
Uh-oh, I was thinking of going to law school next year!
I currently work in the curatorial department of an art museum, and I do enjoy it for the most part but museums are hurting so badly right now. There are precious few job openings within the field so upward mobility seems unlikely for quite a few years.
I would love to be a doctor but I'm not particularly good at science so that went out the window long ago!
Miss Marshmallow, there is actually a viable market for career counselors who specialize in helping former lawyers find alternative careers! I think that would be a great job to have, but unfortunately I can't even figure out an alternative career for myself...let alone for other people...
Well I have a sales background too. I ran a division of my x's insurance agency (was a large one) and did pretty darn well and made more than I do now.
I'd probably be a sales exec. In fact, might consider that in the future or pharma sales.
I currently work in HR, but am back in school for what I really want to do--nutrition. It took me five years to realize working in a field I'm interested in will be worth having to take all of the science classes I skipped as a business undergrad!
However, if I didn't necessarily have to work to pay bills, I would love to own a used bookstore with a little cafe inside where I could sell my own baked goods. Or just get paid to sit around, read, and eat cake...that would also work!
I'm a writer and editor and love love love what I do... but I also love to cook and take pictures in my free time so I could see myself doing something with food (owning a bakery??) or becoming a photographer.
Of course it would be nice if any of these made more money, but what can you do.
I am a teacher and aspiring elementary school principal. I have a fantasy of opening a specialty food shop like the Barefoot Contessa if the principalship isn't my thing!
Well right now I am working full-time in a Psychology research lab and I am also going to school part-time to be an elementary school teacher - I have a really fun job in the present and another great one lined up for the future!
But...if I could be anything...
1. Baker - I love all things sweet and flaky yummy ![]()
2. Astronomer - I am really fascinated by the beauty and wonder of outer space
3. Interior designer - I like to think that I have an artistic eye
Maybe in another life...or at least in retirement?!
My dream is to some day own a little book store with a little coffee/bakery counter where I can enjoy my two passions (yes books & coffee) and my kitty can come to work with me.......or....I would love to run a little motel in a cute, quiet little touristy town in New Hampshire. I have spent my life so far in the hotel business which was sometimes fun but mostly too much stress and not enough appreciation.
I ADORE my job, but if I could choose something else I would probably be a painter. Or maybe a novelist. Something where I could channel my creativity and make beautiful things.
Hmmm if I could do anything I would be an event planner, although I do hate talking on the phone. It seems like I can't get away from it no matter how hard i try. Honestly, and I can't believe I'm saying this cuz i never wanted this, but I'd love to be a stay at home mom. As long as I was able to get me time a couple times a week, I'd be set. My job now umm sucks, little pay for busting my hump. If only the FI could find a job making more than he makes now....
I've just been accepted into a clinical psychology doctorate program, and I'm pretty certain that is the right path for me (or at least i definitely hope so, with 5 more years of school looming over my head).
That said, if I wasn't going to be a psychologist I would definitely be a teacher. I've actually found myself with a few pangs of jealousy as I've watched my friends in education start their careers while I'm still waiting to find out where I'll be doing my first internship.
I've also considered careers in real estate, interior design, and something in the wedding biz (but, admit it, haven't most of us after getting all caught up in DIY projects? lol)
If I could move up in my current field I'd be a US Marshall, I'd love to be one of the Air Marshalls flying undercover on planes. I always thought that was the coolest job. If I would've been good in math/science I would've gone the forensic/lab tech route but I know those jobs are much more boring and tedious then what is portrayed on TV.
If I could do something totally different I'd love to:
I would be a ballerina and dance, dance, dance. My boyfriend said he would want to be an astronaut - great question, espcially at a dinner with new friends :)
I'm a teacher and even though I love it, the hours and expectations are really incredible sometimes. And no it's not a 8 to 2:30 job with weekends off. Way more than that. Anywho, I would love to do something like a baker (even though I'm not the best) or make sushi...lol
I'm an officer in the air force (though my education is in psychology- and am currently working on a second set of degrees in accounting). I love my job, but it's not something I want to do for the rest of my life.
If I could choose anything... I'd love to be a hair stylist/florist. I love hair- and I would love being able to make women look amazing. I also love flowers!
I'm currently in IT field overseeing a team of web developers, designers and editors for a major site. I am also a photographer.
If I could choose anything, I would like to get my PhD and become a teaching professor (business or IT subject). I still want to be a photographer on the side though. Love it. Then during summer break when I don't teach, I can travel the world and take pictures everywhere!
