Is it really a gift if you are getting money for it?

That’s CRAZY!! I dont know how I’d feel.. I’m sure its not as bad as if he had physically impregnanted 70 women because he slept with everyone but still… wow.

I guess I subscribe to the idea that there is a big difference between fathering a child and being a father (even more so if “fathering the child” consisted of a sperm donation) because this doesn’t weird me out to the point that it would affect my everyday life. It’s sort of crazy to think about, biologically speaking, but he wouldn’t really “have 70 kids” in my opinion.

Interesting question, because I never thought about it before, and was kind of surprised by my reaction. Although, you never know for sure until you are actually dealing with it, so I won’t pretend to be certain.

I’m against it for several reasons beyond the realm of this thread.  I would not feel comfortable if my Fiance donated sperm.  Just as he wouldn’t feel comfortable me donating eggs.  I grew up knowing I had half siblings but never got to know them and it’s a weird situation.

One problem I foresee is if for some really bizarre situation arising where his and his wife’s kids meet any of their half siblings and are unaware of it and strike up a relationship (really rare, I know) but still.

i wouldnt have a problem with it but i would be worried if any of those 70 meet up and had a relationship without knowing genetically they are brother and sister.. or brother and brother or whatever

i guess you would need to discuss the “what if” there is one or 70 rings of the bell with a voice on the other side saying hi dad one day – i know its suppose to be a blind donation but people still want to find out about the basic ‘where do i come from’ and it happens

THere are actually some really interesting books on this phenomena.

In Virginia, there were kids from the same sperm donors that got married ….( Ie: one man gave a shit load in a specific geographic area)

Basically, there can be incest going on without knowing it!

Interesting. I’d thought about this concept in passing before, but I’m not sure how I’d react if it actually happened. I think I, like @baliahi1029:, don’t really think of it the same as being a father. I guess you can bring up arguments about fathers who never meet their kid because they don’t want him/her, and adopted fathers and such, but the guy isn’t raising any of these kids and they’d have their own dad wherever they are.

Ok, trying to meet all of them is definitely weird. It’s not like he did it ONCE, and had this emotional reaction to finding out his genetics have been passed on. If he was blase enough to do it that often, it seems odd that it would be important enough for him to try to meet them all.
