Depends on how much. If it’s like a quarter, I’d be all, “OOH! Free parking coin!” But anything much more than that and I’d try to find the owner. You never know if it’s all someone had and it fell out of their pocket, y’know?

letsbeefriends:  If it was a decent sum of money I’d hand it in. I believe in honesty and treating others as you wish to be treated. If it never gets claimed from the police you get a portion of it anyway usually (where I live anyway).  $5, I would probably leave it there (toilet germs, lol).

I’d hand it over to whomever was in charge of where I found it. Karma and all that. Plus, I was just raised that way.

It’s difficult when it’s in public.  Who do you give it to exactly? It’s not a bathroom in a store, etc where there’s management nearby. The police? Will the police even accept it?

Id keep it if it was from a public bathroom, but not one where there was a manager or someone to turn it in to.

It depends how much.  Anything under $100 I would probably keep. Over that, I would find some sort of authority to turn it in to.  It just sucks that if no one came back to claim it you know the person you turn it in to would keep it.<br />

Keep. I’ll always hand something in if there’s any way to identify it, but you can’t do that with money; and I figure if I don’t take it the next person will. Probably at the high end (over a hundred) I’d try to hand it in. (I suspect if I handed in $20 at the mall central office, I’d get laughed at and told to keep it anyway).

I would keep it if there was no form of identifcation. Once my fiance and I found a wallet with probably about a thousand dollars in it, however, there was a driver’s license and a veteran ID in it so there’s really no way we could keep it and be decent people. We did a whitepages search on the guy and found his number, called him, and told him we were taking the wallet to the local police and he could pick it up there. Once my mom found a $100 bill lying on the ground. She kept it. It was in the middle of nowhere so there’s not much she could have done.

Just sitting there with no way of anyone knowing who had dropped it?  Oh, I would pocket that in a second.  But if it was in a wallet with ID or something, I would return it.

If the money was just… laying there…. i’d keep it, but if it would be in a wallet or something of course i would give it back

If I just found cash I’d keep it… a wallet I’d turn in… I’ve turned in the 2 Ipads I’ve found at starbucks- serious people hold on to your ipads! But if it can’t be identified I would keep it unless it was a suspicious amount of money (I’d say like 300+ I’d say something)

aussiemum1248:  Right, I figure the police would laugh at me too if I found less than $100 in public (no ID) and turned it in.  Now, if I find like 100,000 dollars, that I turn into the police because that’s going to bite you in the end.

You need a poll option for “leave it”.  If it were a large amount of money then I would pick it up and hand it in, but if it were a small amount I would just leave it where it is.  Perhaps the person who dropped it will retrace their steps.  The difference between “large amount” and “small amount” would depend on whether or not I myself would bother enquiring at the police station if I lost the amount of money in question.

ETA: And yes, I realise that if it’s a small amount and I just leave it there in the hope that the person who dropped it will find it, then the next person to use the toilet may pick it up and pocket it. Or they may not. I guess I’ll never know.

When I was in high school I worked at the dry cleaners. One day I was sorting through the clothes and I found 3,000 dollars in a customers pocket, I handed it over to my boss.
