    ...what are people/tourists surprised you've never done/seen?

    I'll start:

-I've never been to the Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island

-Never been to the Top of the Rock

    -Never ice-skated in Rock Center

    -Never ate Junior's cheesecake

-Never ate at most of the "famous"  New York places...most of them are "famous for tourists" ;o)

Haha! I am so glad you posted this! I was just thinking about it the other day.

    I've

-never been to the top of the Sears Tower

    -never been to the Bean

-never been to a Cubs game (at this point it's INTENTIONAL. I just feel like saying "get the hell out of my neighborhood!" on game day now.)

    - never been on one of the Chicago boat tours

-never had a Chicago style hot dog

@lilyfaith - I went to Chicago with some girlfriends and they wanted to do ALL of the touristy stuff, but all I wanted to do was shop and go to bars/restaurants. We did end up seeing the Bean, and it was actually kind of cool, but I had no desire to see the Sears Tower.

Generally, when I travel, I like to see how the people there live, now how the tourists do.

@danadelphia: Ohhhh you mean you're from Philly and can't weigh in on Geno's vs. Pat's? ;o)  That must be the same as us NYers always being asked what's a good place to eat in Times Square.

    I heard Tony Luke's is way better than Geno's or Pat's :o)

I live in Philly and I also haven't done most of the things listed above.  Most touristy stuff here are historical things, which I'm not really into.

I have been to Pat's a few times, years ago when I used to eat meat, and I do have to say their cheesesteaks were quite good.  Although my favorite at the time was actually Jim's Steaks.

People are suprised that I hardly ever go to the Strip and that I have seen very few of the shows (I have lived here 10 years and literally just saw Love two weeks ago).  When I went away to college people used to ask what casino I lived in, but I just assumed they were joking.

I love the tourist stuff when I visit other places. I think there's this stigma that if you live there and you go to a tourist place, you're not cool or something, but I'd be really sad if I had never been to Disney World or Universal or Sea World (surprisingly, a lot of Floridians have never been to any)!  My husband hates tourist attractions because he thinks it makes him look like a tourist, but I say "who cares," if it's fun, its fun! There's a reason so many people go.

Does Branson count?! LOL. I used to live in Branson...oh my gosh. I've never:

    -Rode the ducks

-Seen the Neil Diamond Tribute, Acrobates of China, Andy Williams, Baldknobbers, Country Jubilee, etc....

-None of the cruises, haunted houses, Scenic Railways, Butterfly Palaces or museums

I did get to meet the Osmonds once. They tipped well =]

Branson is muy hoosier. But it's a SUPER popular tourist spot for old people or those with kids. Especially old people though

@Tulip - I agree that Jim's is the best. At least better than Pat's. Jim's is easier to get to, as well, because it's right on South St (even though South St. is gross).

    @hotchild - I've never had Tony Luke's either but I hear they're good too.

I'm just not a big cheesesteak fan, though. They're tasty, but so heavy and filling. I always feel kind of sick after I eat one.

@danadelphia - you and are the exact same about traveling! I like museums, etc, but I hate the tourist trap type places.

@JennyChicago - haha, I know! And I can't even pull the "but I live in Lakeview, not the Loop!" excuse, because I had classes in the Loop for my entire freshman year. I pretty much stick to the north side unless I'm doing something specific, though.

The Cubs games, however, just make me mad. I was going out to see my horse yesterday, and because it was opening day they had even more streets closed than usual. I live right at the lake and Addison/Cornelia area in Lakeview East, so literally there's no way for me to avoid it. I'm so sick of stupid drunk people thinking that it looks like they're from the city if they just run out in front of traffic.

@bree: I actually do want to go to the Statue of Liberty at some point, but in the five years I've lived here, I've just never gotten around to it.

In NYC, at least, some of the tourist stuff just seems stupid if you live here.  Like all the "famous" restaurants are usually just overpriced and crappy.  And there's no point in me going to the Top of the Rock because I worked in a skyscraper in Midtown...same view.  As for ice-skating in Rock Center, it's REALLY small and Bryant Park or Museum of Natural History rinks are better.

@danadelphia - i agree...steaks can be so good at 2 am, but as soon as you're finished, it's a whole lot of feeling totaly gross.

Another Philly girl weighing in - Jim's is definitely the best.  But in the whole side of the Pat's vs Geno's debate, I choose Pat's.  I've never been to Geno's and never will be but thats how we do it in philly. (at least that's how my friends and I have decided!) We pick one, swear its the best, and never go to (literally) the other side of the street.

@hotchild - you must get a slice of juniors cheesecake (if you like cheesecake) :)  it's delish.

@ hotchild - actually, I will admit I rarely go to the "tourist" restaurants. I agree most are crappy and overpriced. Food is one area that I'd rather ask a local (or one of the hotel employees) what they suggest and totally avoid the popular places.

Although I do love me a Carnegie Reuben!

I don't think Columbus, Ohio is really a tourist spot :) but the one thing we do have is the Ohio State Buckeyes. People are freakin obsessed with the OSU football nonsense and I sooo don't get it. Probably the most common questions I get when people find out I live in Columbus/went to OSU are 1) OMG don't you just LOVE going to games? and 2) Do you know [insert name of random football player or random student who went to OSU].

No, no I don't love games. In fact, I've never been to one and never even watched one on tv! I know that makes me probably the only person in OSU history to go to the school for 6 years (undergrad + law) and actually avoid the games... but I don't like football and fans annoy me.

And no, I do not know {random person}. At any given time there are approximately 50,000 students at OSU! It is constantly in flux with for either the #1 or #2 biggest school in terms of both student body size and campus size. That's like saying: Oh you're from Akron? Do you know [random person]. Lol. I KNEW one football player, and met one other one. As for other randoms, unless I lived with them or had a class with them, I probably didn't know them. Sorry. :)

I grew up in NYC so when I was in elementary and middle school we did a lot of field trips to empire state, statue of liberty, ect.

I have yet to go to: the guggenheim, the new gangster musem on St. Marks, and I don't think anyone can ever see ALL of the MET. I also am going to go explore sheepshead bay and park slope at some point this summer.

@HotCHildInTHECity- I highly suggest the tennament museum ($20), and the Brooklyn transit musem ($5)

Hmmm, I too am in NYC.  I've never done Top of the Rock or ice skated there (only done Bryant Park...cause it's free...), but I went to an SNL taping, so I feel I can cross Rock Center off my list (FI even ran out for the end of the night's free banana pudding from Magnolia - which makes it seem even more touristy!)

My 1st apt was off the Q at Dekalb in B'lyn, so we didn't go to play tourist but Juniors was definitely a frequent stop for drunk late night munchies.  It's literally RIGHT outside the station.

I def don't consider myself a touristy person AT ALL (despite living for a time in the middle of Times Square.  Yes it was an awful as you would imagine), but I always felt guilty telling visiting friends & family to go it all alone.  I can barely make it to Battery Park without getting lost, my parents wouldn't stand a chance.

I'd say in my 7+ yrs here, I've pretty much done it all (and perhaps consequently am ready to get the f- outta dodge)

    Ok here it goes:

I have never been to the Getty Musem... at least I don't remember and I LOVE musems.

I have never been to the LA Observatory either... but I would also love to go there.

LA is an hour away and that is if there is no traffic... and that is impossible.

Being the first born outside of Southampton England on my Dad's side and having older brothers and a sister that still live there and visit often, I've done pretty much everything there is to do as far as touristy stuff in LA but . . .

I've never been on one of those tours of the movie stars homes, they just drive me nuts and cause soooo much traffic, they slow down and sometimes stop during the worst times, personally I think they should be banned on weekdays during rush hour.

I've never been to Marylin Monroe's grave (though I really would love to do that).

    I've never been to a Laker's game.

I've never been to Randy's doughnuts and I REALLY want to at some point cuz they're really supposed to be the best.

I've never been to the water park that's attached to Knott's Berry Farm.

I've never been to Raging Waters.

@HCITC - I STRONGLY disagree with anything positive said about Polar Rink!!  We went last year and despite being a competitive skater I could barely go a few feet without losing it; FI spent his entire afternoon at Bryant Park on his ass but flew across the fake-ice at PR with no problem.  I don't care if it's better for the envronment - the rink SUCKS!!!!

@Ms. Caniche: They Getty is BEAUTIFUL! I'm admittedly not much of an art museum person, but it is so worth it for the architecture, gardens, and city view (on a clear day)!!

And you reminded me I've never been to Griffith Observatory.. or a USC football game (even though the stadium is 20 minutes away) :p

@Cricket: I didn't know ANYBODY went on those celebrity home/stalker tours!

I grew up around Chicago but I did most of the tourist stuff there. I had many, many years though!

In DC... eh. I do them when my parents visit. Still haven't done the White House, haven't done the Capitol even though I live a few blocks away. I've never been to a Caps game and I never will because their fans clog up my trains. :)

Oh and most of the Smithsonians, haven't been to those. ha.

Never been to the Statue of Liberty (though I'd like to see that one, actually!), or anything Rockefeller Center related.  Otherwise I've done a LOT of the touristy stuff because, we host people from out of town with some frequency and the usual things on their lists are well, touristy.

But I refuse to eat a street hotdog.  Just not happening.  Don't care how awesome people say they are - not gonna happen.  Have also thus far managed to avoid eating in lots of the awful, over-priced restaurants aimed at parting out of towners from their cash.

@ribbons- really?! I lived in DC for just three months and I pretty much did it all. Not the white house tour because I'd done that before on a visit, but I loved going to the smithsonians and the lesser-known museums. I also went to a caps game, and boy was it ugly haha.

I've never been to coit tower, driven down lombard, gone to alcatraz (so much bird poo!!!), had clam chowder at the pier or wharf, been on a cable car, been to the stinkin' rose... that's all I can think of.

I grew up in Las Vegas. There is so much to do there! However, when I lived there I had never:

    Been to the Hoover Dam.

Seen the white tigers at the Mirage.

Seen the Grand Canyon (only a few hours away).

Seen a Cirque Soleil show (it was only until I moved away for years did I go and see one).

Been in a limo (it seems to be the norm here).

I want to do all these things now!

@Corgi - are you REALLY from Akron?  My FI is too!  I won't bother you with the "do you know him" since you specifically mentioned it bugs you but isn't that funny.  He jokes about knowing LeBron James all the time.

He is total OSU fan/brainwashed though.  His last name actually starts with the letter U and he convinced me to name our son Owen Spencer U.  I could care less, but I love the name (and him) so now I'm stuck.
