I've been on a Kindle spree! I'm reading every dystopian YA novel I can get my hands on...and I'm running out, haha. I really liked Divergent by Veronica Roth, and the Declaration trilogy by Gemma Malley. I even reread The Giver for like the 50th time (so good, right?).
Help me out, readers. What are yalls recs for Hunger Games withdrawal? (Not just YA, I'll read anything).
I don't have any recs yet, but appreciate yours! Thank you for posting! :) I bought The Hunger Games for my son, but read it first to be sure it was appropriate and couldn't put it down.
Have you ever read anything by Margaret Atwood? She has these bizarre dystopian companion novels: Oryx and Crake and The Year of the Flood. Totally bizarre and totally creepy.
ETA: Also, a quick Google search turned up these YA titles.
I'm a librarian, so I get copies of books that haven't come out yet alot. If you liked Hunger Games, check out Variant by Robinson Wells. AMAZING!!! Sale Date: 10/18
Divergent is fabulous too. I heart being a YA librarian!
LOVE THEM! I felt like I lost my best friend when they were over. I couldn't read for weeks (and I am an English teacher!) I am reading Feed right now - YA. It is dystopian seems pretty good.
I really enjoy dystopias in general though: Fahrenheit 451, 1984, Animal Farm, Martian Chronicles, Oryx and Crake, A Brave New World, Cat's Cradle, "Harrison Bergeron" which is a short story
Recently I read The Book Thief and 13 Reasons Why which are young adult and were both good reads.
On my to read list is Running Man which I hear is amazing.
@afuturemrsl: OMG I LOVE Feed!!! Love love love it! Mira Grant really thought through the world she created, and it is awesome. There's a sequel, too :)
@Sazerac: I've probably read The Giver that many times too :) I just read "The Postmortal," which is a near future dystopia about what happens after the cure for aging is discovered. Its one of the best books I've read in a while.
@Mrs. Spring: Ooo thanks, I've read The Handmaid's Tale, but neither of those. Awesome.
@b00kbug: I'll put that on my list. I'm super jealous of your job, btw. I love teaching but no one sends TAs advance copies of anything except textbooks.
@afuturemrsl: I LOVE Cat's Cradle. By far my favorite Vonnegut.
Thanks, ladies! Anyone else?
@sarahbabs: The Postmortal sounds good - the Declaration has a similar premise.
I really love how so many of these books have strong female protagonists. A nice counterpoint to the codependent mess that is Bella Swan, haha.
@Sazerac: Agreed! In that vein, have you read The Golden Compass or The Knife of Never Letting Go? Neither are exactly dystopias, but great alternate worlds.
This is a great topic - totally giving me ideas for my next Kindle purchase :)
@sarahbabs: I love The Golden Compass (and the rest of the trilogy), but haven't read The Knife of Never Letting Go (that's a great title, though).
I'm seriously dangerous on amazon.com. I try really hard not to spend a lot on any one book, but it's hard to restrain myself, especially after a cocktail or three. I turn my kindle on the next day and have like 8 new books! I try to justify it because I've banned myself from buying more clothes, and hey, like I used to explain to my parents, there are a LOT of worse things to spend money on. I'm super psyched about library lending being available though, maybe that'll curb my kindle spending a little...
@Sazerac: Oh, if you love the Golden Compass (its one of my favorites), then you'll love The Knife of Never Letting Go. My fiance read that trilogy first and the Golden Compass one immediately after, and he still goes back and forth about which one was better. I've been rereading the Golden Compass et al for about 15 years now, so my loyalty lies with Pullman, but its a strong contender :)
You sound a lot like me - when my mom used to yell at me for staying up late reading as a kid, I'd be like "MOM, I could be doing drugs instead" LOL Having a smart kid must try parents' patience :D
I'm so excited there are so many other dystopia lovers out there! I always feel like the only one, and I'm constantly having to explain what "dystopia" means when people ask what I like to read. There's one I haven't gotten to read yet, but I saw it in the store and have been salivating for it ever since. It's called Wither, by Lauren DeStefano. Also, if you haven't read it, a book called Songmaster, by Orson Scott Card. It's amazing.
@b00kbug: I love/want your job! I just finished my Master's degree in Library Media, so I'm a state certified school media specialist, but halfway through the program, I decided I really wanted to be a young adult librarian. Need my MLS first though, I think. :-)
Have you read The Uglies by Scott Westerfield? I haven't read this series yet but I've heard good things about it.
Two things that I really liked that had a similar feel to Hunger Games were Unwind by Neal Shusterman and Matched by Ally Condie. Unwind was CRAZY but amazing, it's going to be a series. Matched was good as well.
@sweetpea87: Do it! I love my job. There are days where I want to crawl under my desk and cry, but for the most part the kids I have are wonderful. And teens are at such a fun age when you can do really cool programs with them.
Matched (I forgot the author--a woman)
The Maze Runner
Kick-ass female characters:
Graceling (Kristen Cashore--my favorite book!)
Fire (the prequel to Graceling, but can easily stand alone)
Awesome YA books in general
The Theif (Megan Whalen Turner)
Jellicoe Road
Sabriel, Lireal, Abhorsen (Garth Nix)
I could go on and on and on, I am kind of a YA freak...I am an unemployed high school English teacher, so I sort of have an excuse....
@luvdmb36: Oh my goodness, I absolutely LOVE Sabriel et al.
YA in general has a lot of hidden gems - its good to meet other "grown ups" that like it too :)
@MrsDibs: I just read Matched! I think the sequel's coming out pretty soon, I'm looking forward to reading it. I think it's called Crossed?
@luvdmb36: Ha whenever I mention YA books my students (mostly college freshmen) look at me like I'm a crazy person. Graceling looks badass.
@sarahbabs: The Knife of Never Letting Go is 2.99 for kindle...mine!
All these suggestions look so good...not helping my kindle addiction haha.
@Sazerac: I just read Crossed! I work in a library and one of my friends got the copy early, it was good but a little choppy because they change view points for every chapter.
OMG. have you read the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs? The first book started slow but got addicted very quick. I also second The Uglies. that was very similar to The Hungar Games.
I liked the first book in the Uglies series but not the rest of them so much--the series deteriorated as it continued, in my opinion.
I really, really enjoyed Wither, though, a fairly recent novel by Lauren DeStefano. Definitely fits the YA dystopia theme!
I second the Maze Runner Trilogy by James Dashner. The final book for the series is coming out in a couple weeks.
@Sazerac: Oh my goodness, awesome! You have to PM me and tell me how you liked it when you are done :)
ohh, I was in a really ugly reading low after finishing the Hunger Games series! (sad, right?)
I saw that this book wasn't recommended yet, and I'm excited to share it. Delirium by Lauren Oliver was such a great book! It's also the first of a YA series in the making.
Also loved Matched!
I think I might read the Uglies next summer. I have heard it is really quick reading!
I am loving this thread and now have an extensive summer reading list. Damn that I have so many months to wait for the school year to be over! Haha
The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan. There are actually 3 books in the series, and they are all amazing! The kickass female narrators totally remind me of Katniss.
Its not dystopian but you guys might like The Naming. I think the series is called the Books of Pellinor.
I finally bought The Hunger Games for my kindle - and read it in less than a day! I know I'm not going to be able to wait to buy the next one either lol
Sooo... I finished the last book in the series last night :) I loved it - you really end up caring about the characters.
It is amazing how much you can miss a series when it is over lol
Shatter Me is a dystopian YA novel that comes out on the 15th, I just finished the Advanced Readers copy and I REALLY liked it. I think the main character needs a little bit more development, but this book is a precursor to a series as far as I can tell, and I have very high hopes.
I really enjoy utopian and dystopian novels. I actually took a whole class devoted to them in HS.
Enders Game - Orson Scott Card
This is a bit more sci-fi than Hunger Games is, but I think it had a dysotopian feel to it as well. Its one of my favourite books.
And if you read that and enjoy it, Psion Beta and Psion Gamma - Jacob Gowans, are amazing, and along the same lines :)
Try "Battle Royale". It's a Japanese book with a similar premise to Hunger Games, but bigger in scope. There's loads of characters all with Japanese names so that was kind of tough but there's only a few characters you really need to remember!
@Rachael432: Yes to the Shatter Me comment! I loooove it and I swear it's not just because my Matron of Honor is the author :) And it's definitely a series... a trilogy, actually. It comes out today and should be available everywhere! yay! :)
I just started reading Mockingjay and I already know I'll have withdrawls when it's done! I am so excited about this thread... I am putting a lot of these books on my Christmas wish list for FI!
