So a few unnamed family members have called my Carnival wedding stupid and lame. Well that’s just fine. I’ll be happy to take the money we would have spent on feeding and entertaining you and use it towards our honeymoon.

Tell them THEY are stupid and lame : )  For real though, don't let it bother you.  Some people have no filter.

I think your carnival wedding sounds like tons of fun! I would be so excited if I got invited to a fun-themed wedding! Boo to people who don't like creative ways of doing things.

I would love to go to a carnival themed wedding, it sounds kick ass. Your family members need to learn how to keep things to themselves.

People are so critical. You'll have way more fun without them there judging your wedding!!! Once they see the pictures and realize how it all came together and how happy you & your Mr. look, they'll wish they weren't such jerks.

I WISH I could pull off a carnival wedding!

I love all the carnival/circus themed weddings I've seen on the blogs, and I would have LOOOVED to do something fun like that, but FI's family used to own a carnival, and he's pretty sensitive about it (ie. he really hates when people know about it).

So, I had to nix the idea before it even formed in my head. :(

@tinylittlebird: Awww I could see why he’d dislike it. FI is a big kid at heart and I am super outgoing and goofy so this should be perfect for us. Also, it is a big day for my six year old daughter, too, so I want her to have a great, memorable day too.

Seriously I don't get why someone would be rude. It's a wedding you're not going to have crusty the clown being the officiant. (As awesome as it may be) you're not going to have elephants just wondering around. You are going to make it very tasteful.

ETA- DOOOO EEEETTTTTT!!! Move it to Pittsburgh!!!! Miss Tattoo's venue is STUNNING!

    @SoontobeMrsA: HELL YEA!

Tell them to keep their behinds at HOME!

I was sooo wanting to do so many themed ideas that I loved. I went through phases. Medieval themed wedding, a Venician Carnival themed wedding (like on Labyrinth), and an Oriental themed wedding (and we aren't Oriental!)

We decided to keep things simple for budget reasons...but I wish someone would have told me my wedding sounded dumb... they could kiss my big fat ----*ahem

Pshh! I know of quite a few Bees (myself included) who would gladly take their place.

I've found that people who aren't into the whole wedding world can't see past the traditional wedding stuff. How boring would all of these weddings be if everyone did the same thing? I think your carnival wedding is beyond awesome and I'm not gonna lie, I may be a little jealous!

Yea people are stupid, but I think most people just haven't been to a wedding in 20 years and they don't realize that we can make them fun with themes now! I really pushed for several themes but I got a bunch of dirty looks from everyone, even FI said "isn't our theme..our wedding?" So I ended up just letting it go. I think once they show up they'll realize how fun it is, they just think that weddings should just be lots of tulle and white!

@UpstateCait: Thanks. You know you’re invited.

@arenyth:How do you pronounce your screen name? I like pink a lot and the theme is just natural for us.

When all is said and done, the day is about the two of you. It's hard to ignore nay-sayers but always keep in mind what this day is about. So if a carnival them suits you guys, absolutely do it! BTW, I think it's a great idea!

@SoontobeMrsA: Listen up Sistah! You know that I'm doing the same idea/theme - I got soooooooooooooooo much grief from both sides of the family. A lovely cousin from loverboy's side said to me "it's your wedding, do what you want."

For me, my biggest challenge was trying to explain the idea briefly without going into to detail - family members quickly rushed to judge - as if I was going to be throwing a birthday party for a 4 year old. Remember that the goal here is to marry the person you love. It doesn't matter if you wear a garbage bag as a dress and you serve them McDonalds. You love him and he loves you - keep that as your focus and all will be water off a duck's back :)

    - your carnival twin :)

Obviously your theme sounds awesome and many of us would love to be able to go to a wedding with a carnival theme. They just can't see the awesomeness, but I'm sure once they see it, they'll be completely amazed.

They must have never been to a theme wedding.  They are really fun and guests really seem to like them because they get different treats like candy and popcorn.  My girlfriend did the 1950s Grease theme and served hot dogs, coke floats and popcorn.  We loved it!  My hubby and I did the 1940s aviation theme and our guests loved it!  I'm sure some people thought our idea of getting married on the side of a runway was silly but until you see it in person you can't fully get the concept.  I would just keep things under your hat and not give out the details because you want people to be surprised too.  And also, let them talk about it because they will feel STUPID when everyone else at the wedding is talking about how awesome and fun the wedding is!

totally tell them to stay home!! they sound like lame-os anyway. i know i have one boring table who will likely not stand, mingle, laugh, or even talk to each other the whole night. if yours are assertive enough to actually comment!! they deserve the flick.

One of them said “You aren’t afraid people will call it lame and stupid?” and then my more eloquent family member said “That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. You’re kidding right?"
