My friend just asked me to be his Best Man, but we don't know what I should be called. Any ideas? So far we thought of "Best Woman", "Best Lady" and "Best Maid", Right now he likes Best Lady (of course, final decision goes to the bride!)

I like "Best Woman" because that's the most parallel to "Best Man." "Lady" just happens to be my personal pet peeve, though...it bugs me when people say "lady" when really they mean "woman." (Sometimes "lady" is indeed the appropriate word choice, but it's not really a good substitute for "woman.")

Omg, I'm so overthinking this. I'm sorry! haha.

Ok, don't take this the wrong way - but my best guy friend always jokes that I'll be his 'best bitch' lol.

I like Best Woman the most!

@AnneTossy: Too funny! Some grandmas reading the programs would get the vapors! Heheh.

This one is tricky, because I think of his wife as his best woman/lady/etc. That's probably just me. But of the options, I like Best Woman. I can't think of a different alternative that isn't 'best female of some sort,' but I'll keep thinking :-)

I'm having a male "maid of honor" and we're calling him Bridesman of Honor.

I think you should go with whatever makes you and your friend the most comfortable!  I personally like the sound of "Best Woman" the best, though. :)

How about Lady of Honor?  Woman of Honor?

I mean you'd be a Maid/Matron of honor on the Bride's side, why not the Grooms?

I also agree that "Best Lady" should be reserved for Wifey.  ;)

It's like that Seinfeld joke... "If HE'S the best man, why aren't you marrying HIM?" or something like that. It's true, it's kind of weird terminology if you think about it!

    Best Maid?

I like Best Woman.  It's closest to "Best Man" but obvious that you the groom's #1 sidekick lol

I was the best 'man' once, and they just said I was the 'groom's attendant' since I was the only one.

I get why everyone is saying "Best Lady" is the wife - but then why isnt "Best Man" the groom? you know what im saying? haha. Best Woman is okay, it just sounds so OLD to me and him haha.

    also - i love Seinfeld!!!!

I like the sounds of "Best Woman".  It sounds like it will be a lot of fun to be on the groom's side!

I just googled this question and there is a lot of advice out there.

Some ppl say it should be maid of honor since she is his closest friend just as the brides closest friend is a female and the maid of honor. So the bride would have a MOH and the groom would have his own MOH. Although it might appear confusing on the program. IDK LOL Good luck!

@luvmyDwight: I saw that, too. There was also Bride's Honor Attendant and Groom's Ho or Attendant. Those are nice and gender neutral.

*ETA-Groom's Honor Attendant! Damn you, autocorrect!

The standard term seems to be "Best Woman," but you can use anything that works for the couple and for you.  In a reverse of that situation, my son was our "Dude of Honor."
