I totally understand. I consider myself to be very independent and self-sufficient, but roaches turn me into this screaming, freaking out weirdo. They just look so disgusting! They're pretty common in Florida because of the humidity, so I run into a few roaches a year. I've called my bf to come over and kill one for me once. Don't be too freaked out about finding anymore. It was probably just a random one from outside. Just keep some lights on (I heard they don't like light, but I have absolutely no idea how true that is). And just remember, it's just a bug and it won't hurt you. Good luck!
Oh god that sounds awful. I've never seen a real cockroach but I imagine they are repulsive.
We used to have an issue with house centipedes in our old apartment. These things are the single most disgusting creatures on the planet. I won't post a pic since they tend to make people squeemish but if you've never seen one, check it out.
They like dampness so I have had a number of them crawl up the drain into our kitchen sink. That is not something I want to encounter when doing dishes!
@Boston Bee: Thank you! Just talking about it online makes me feel less alone somehow. I'm still scared to death though. Some Halloween weekend :(
Ick! I hate roaches too :(
If it's not dead, you should smack it with the shoe until it dies. Seriously. And then go in another room.
Also, if it's a bigger roach, it may honestly be alone. It's when you find babies that you have to worry - that means they're nesting in your home. The big ones can roam alone in search of a new home, but you killed him right away, so he won't be settling in any time soon!
@UpstateCait: Lucky you, never having seen one. We do have them in the building, I know this for a fact. When I lived in a different apt on the 9th floor, same building, I had recurring infestations despite three fumigations. I caught them entering from under the front door. That's the reason why I moved out. Then we moved back to the 25th floor with my husband because everything else about the place is so awesome. We chose an apartment further away from the trash chute, put traps everywhere and poured boric acid all around the kitchen. We haven't had a single sighting in 2.5 years. And now tonight of all nights I saw that horrible thing
@daydreamwanderer: Thanks, I really hope it was a lone one that wandered in accidentally. I'm sitting in the study right now. No dinner or tv for me tonight.
i only saw this now, but i am with you on the panic attack. i went to therapy for my roach phobia and its been a year, and it totally doesnt freak me out. i also have am emergency stash of klonopin for when i really start to panic!
Actually the huge ones (at least in my exp) come from outside and it may have really been alone. If your house is clean and it just walks in looking sorta confused (because they usually will hide esp in a dirty house) it could have very well been alone, so don't freak out yet. The smaller ones are usually never alone though. Good job on getting it yourself!! Haha

In the living room, walking on the wall
Roaches are one of my biggest phobias in life. Husband's out with his friends for a guy's night and I'm alone. I called him crying and screaming and while talked me through it I killed it with a shoe, but I'm so freaked out I can't stop crying. Where there's a roach there's always more. What if I see another one? Plus I'm afraid he's not really dead but just stunned and is going to crawl from under the shoe.
The last time he went out with his friends months ago and I was home by myself at night, there was a drunk rowdy crowd partying in the hallway and trying to break a door so I had had to call the cops. Normally our life is so quiet and normal. Why does this sh!t always happen when he's away???
