So it happened.  I proposed to my girlfriend and she said yes.  Unfortunately I didn't get any photos as it unfolded and she has now just popped out to get us some lunch so will get a photo of her ring when she gets back.  I got her a 18ct white gold diamond band with seven flush set diamonds.  Everyone who saw it said it was very her and she loved it.  It looked really nice on her hand.

For ages I struggled to find the words of what to say.  I didn't quite know how to word it, but after going to her brother and mum for their blessing I realised one of the main reasons behind wanting to marry my girlfriend is wanting to start a family.

I've always wanted children but I think recently i've realised how big a part of my life I want that to be.  I want her and I to both be Mums and have children and have that family unit.  I dont care if we use a sperm donation, if we adopt or if we do egg sharing.  My parents seperated when I was young and although I had very regular contact with my Dad, I never had "family christmas."  It was always one year with my Dad, the next with my Mum.  Both of them had very different takes on christmas.  My mum is very traditional and we would go to my Grans or my Uncles.  My Dad was a devout vegitarian and so we had veggie christmas which was more of a buffet where we'd sit and just chat, surrounded by his cats.  Both versions were cool in their own ways but I always just wanted a family christmas.  Since getting serious with my girlfriend I've spent christmas with her family a couple times and I love it.  Family is such a big driving force behind us getting married.

Getting married, or having a civil partnership as it is legally called in the UK, opens the gate ways for us starting that family.  A wedding is just one day and on that day i'm looking forward to the nice dress, and the nice food and seeing all my friends and family in one place.  But a marriage is forever, and in that I am looking forward to setting up a home together and raising a family.

So that's that.  I proposed and she said yes.  We had caviar canapes and peach belinis.  Now, I await my proposal from her and my ring.  I'm told its coming soon.

    Photos to follow.

Congratulations! I can't wait to hear about her proposal to you!

Will the new equal marriage laws be in place in time for your wedding?

@SpecialSundae:  I'm not sure.  We'd probably plan to marry 2014, and ideally I'd like to marry and not just be joined in civil partnership.  Civil partners have different legal rights when it comes to children and also tax breaks.  However I imagine if we married before the change, the government will offer the option of gay couples having the status of their union "upgraded".

I'm also from Scotland and so if Scotland passes the legislation, I may have the option of going home and marrying there then coming back to England, bit like Americans do with Canada.  I keep an eye on Scottish politics and see that it may pass up there before it does down here.  Though I'd worry it may not be recognised here in England.

@anahappilyeverafter:  There would be outcry if legal gay marriages performed in Scotland weren't recognised in England. I had a legal humanist ceremony in Scotland and I'm still recognised as married in England even though the ceremony wouldn't be legal.

Two of my best friends are planning a gay humanist wedding for January 2015 and hoping all the legislation is through in time.

I still dont have photos because she's just come back and proposed herself and now I have a ring myself!  Apparently she was planning all along too and decided to bring it forward as hers would only have been another couple of weeks.

I have an 18ct white gold blue sapphire surrounded by diamonds.

PHOTOS SOON!  Oonce I get over the shock..

    Congrats!

I just have a question since I haven't heard of this before - what does it mean to have her propose to you as well? Are you both engaged now since you proposed to her, or will you be engaged only once she proposes back?

@redheadem:  We both wanted to wear engagement rings.  So we were engaged from the moment I proposed.  but we always agreed that the person who didnt propose originally would create a special occasion to give the ring to the other one.  Sort of like a second proposal but more of just a nice occasion to give them the ring.

Luckily, she just came home with my ring as she too had been planning her proposal.  I just beat her too it and she has now returned the favour with her proposal.  :D  She brought me my favourite foods too and served them to me with the ring.

    We are both engaged.  :D

CONGRATS! My fiancee' and I did it that way too... I proposed last NYE and then she did in March of this year... neither of us had any idea. We announced our engagement after I had my ring and started planning the wedding!

Congratulations! Do post photos soon. I must see! If you did the macaroon box, I definitely want to see that too. It all sounds so lovely.

I hope the legislation passes in time for you two. My SO and I were just talking about that and how unfortunate it is that only civil partnerships are available. Though I'd imagine you would be able to "upgrade" if marriage did pass afterwards.
