Ladies, I take this moment, between Superbowl commercials, to announce to you.... that I'm engaged!
J and I have been in NYC this weekend, and he was supposed to leave this afternoon, but because of the snow in DC, his bus was cancelled, so he called in to work tomorrow and we stayed an extra day.
We spent the better part of three hours wandering through Central Park this morning, reveling in the extension of our weekend away together, talking, holding hands, just enjoying being together... when we stopped to stand on a large rock overlooking a lake. It was beautiful, quiet, the perfect setting.
We had been talking yesterday about what would be 'deal breakers' for us (his was if I had no legs, haha) in our/a relationship, and he brought it up again, asked if there was anything that would be a deal breaker for me, in him.
I replied that I am more sure of him than I have ever been of anything else in my life, except China.
He brought up the first day we spent together this past summer, when he came to visit me (at this point I knew he was getting up the courage to propose), when we had talked, as friends, about what we were both looking for in a relationship. He asked if I remembered what I had told him - I did, and reiterated a list of things I'd told God that I would need in a man if I were ever to consider getting into another relationship. At the time, those were not things I was expecting to find in this old friend who surprised me with a visit on the other side of the world, but as our week together progressed, I saw more and more of them in him, until I realized they were all there. He was everything I never thought I'd find in one man. That's the only reason I said yes when he asked if I would date him; because I knew then and there that I would marry him someday.
He turned to me and took my hands in his (both of us wearing gloves) and pulled me to him. He told me he wants to spend all of my life, and all of his life, with me. That he wants me to fix his grammatic mistakes, to make hodge podge meals with him, to have quarter asian babies, to quack at each other from a hundred meters away [we quack at each other... it's one of our weird couple quirks]. And then he got down on one knee, pulled out a ring box with a trembling hand, and asked me to marry him. I cried a little, I said yes a dozen times, and I pulled off my gloves to try on my beautiful ring.
My ring is nothing I expected, and I love love love it, more so because J told me that he went to dozens of ring stores to look for it (we looked at rings together online, but never in person), and he chose a ring custom designed by a husband a wife team, and bought it at a local jeweler. My diamond is nearly perfect (he was so excited to show me the certificate, haha) and bigger than I ever expected (.7 carats)!!!
I'll post pictures later, but wanted to share my proposal story with you guys. :D I was going to wait until we got back to DC, but I'm bored with the football, haha, so I popped on WB for the first time this weekend.
Waiting girls, your time is coming, and I promise -- it will be worth the wait! Enjoy every moment together. :)
