So I have a friggin stomach virus. I can’t even look at food without wanting to vomit and I’ve spent all day in bed, sleeping, trying to get over it. Around 3 when I realized it wasn’t going to go away in time for school tomorrow, I emailed my professors to let them know I’ll have to miss class. I’m well under my alotted days missed, but I get an email back from my public speaking teacher. I’d explained my situation and asked if it was possible for me to do my speech Thursday (another group is going so it’s not like I’d be the only speech that day and he’s let multiple other people do it), and his response was “No, we’ll discuss your options when you return to class.” What options?! It’s too late for me to drop the class and unless he lets me make it up (we only have a handful of grades in this class, although I have a B average getting a zero on anything will drop my grade significantly) I’ll end up with a low grade and possibly loose my scholarship, which has a GPA minimum attached. I’m freaking out that he isn’t going to let me make it up and I’m so scared bees. I can’t afford to have my grade screwed up like that 🙁 Words of comfort, anyone?

well….you’re sick & you can’t go. i would try not to worry about it too much right now and see what the options he gives are. maybe there’s some kind of other assignment you can do or something.

@ForeverBirds: If he didn’t have any other options for you, he wouldn’t have said “we’ll discuss your options in class”. I’m sure he’s not going to just give you a zero. Just calm down and relax or else your virus isn’t going to go away.

@ForeverBirds: You definitely need to get a medical excuse for your absence. Drag yourself to the doctor tomorrow if you have to.
If you have a medical excuse, he can’t NOT let you make it up in some way.

Go get a doctor’s note! It may come in handy if you have to prove you were actually sick and not just playing hooky!

@ForeverBirds: Ask for clarification on other options. It’s possible he can’t just let you do it Thursday because he’s only slotted so much time or something.
Would a doctor’s note help?
Worst (best?) case scenario, you could always show up and puke on his shoes…

Most universities have a policy that if you are sick (and it can be documented), professors are not allowed to penalize you. I would check in your syllabus and see if this is the case. Don’t freak out just yet!

Im sure there are acctual options, not just a “sorry you get a zero.” I bet he will let you make it up during his office hours even, there may even be other students in your situation where you can all get together and make the speech up. I do agree with PP though, go to a doctor or on campus physician to at least get a note, that way you have all of your bases covered. Everything is going to be okay! 🙂 Feel better soon!

Definitely go to the doctor. At my college most teachers won’t let you make anything up without one. But once you have one they are fine.

Honestly, it sounds like you’re overreacting. Assuming you don’t have a bad relationship, I doubt he meant “You will get a 0 and fail the class.”
He probably just wants to discuss some alternatives with you. You’re letting him know in advance, which most people appreciate.

Get to a doctor tomorrow so you can have a note just in case. I think you’re thinking too much into this though. I’m sure it will be okay! Get some rest and don’t stress about this.

Get a doctor’s note. Talk to your professor to see what options you have. If he doesn’t give you a chance to make up the grade, you can go to the Dean or chair of the speech department to help resolve the issue since you can’t work it out with the teacher. I highly recommend talking to your teacher first, but if need be, escalate it as far as you need.

Definitely go to a doctor or your campus health service so you can “prove” you were sick.

How would one class drop your GPA to the extent that you’d lose your scholarship? Are you already on probation for it?

I totally get your nervousness. I would react the same way, but I think we’d both be overreacting.
He was completely rude and thoughtless with his email, especially after you expressed your concern.
I agree with PPs – go to the doctor in case he continues to be a jerk.
