@mandb122:I'm about to go Skype with my dad so I can't stick around tonight. But what about furnished apartments for business execs and other people who need something less expensive than a hotel for short amount of time.
You can put your stuff in storage and live for a month while you figure out the best and most affordable neighborhoods. Just a thought. Good luck and believe me, I know how hard it is to find the right rental. So, take your time if you can.
Has your DH checked with his company about their suggestions? Sometimes they will make a suggestion on locations that a lot of their employees lives--at least for recent college graduates.
@beekiss: He can ask but the company is weird. They're mainly located in Maryland but the employees are contracted all over the world. So they may know, but may not have ever been to this location.
We found one we thought was great, it's in a good location and was just what we needed. We looked at a map - right beside railroad tracks. And I mean the tracks are right behind the yard.
We also have another house that is absolutely perfect. But it's 30 minutes from my husband's work (which might increase with snow?) and over an hour to Minneapolis (or fifteen minutes driving plus forty minutes on a train) which might get tiring if we want to go there every weekend or every other weekend.
@PutABirdOnIt: The ones that are available August 1 are nice so we may stay in an extended stay hotel for two weeks and move in after that. We're going the pod route with moving our stuff so we can tell them to store it instead of dropping it off at a house.
@mandb122: My goodness, same here we are moving out of my landlord-in law to a new residence the problem is the same to expensive, to small, or doesn't have a garage.
@beatriz: That's one of our other issues. We really want some kind of fireplace, even if it's small, since we're moving from a very hot climate to a very cold one. This we can compromise on but we really don't want to.
@julies1949: We're generally looking in the Minneapolis metro area although that's not where his job is. Mostly west, north, and northwest.
@mandb122: Drive time will def increase with snow and ice, not to mention traffic in the cities area! Though heading out of the cities for work is usually better then heading into the cities, as it's going the opposite way of most traffic, depending on what time he works.
We think we found the house we want. We decided against the townhome for one main reason and that is that we wanted a fenced in yard. We talked about if we wanted a fireplace to keep warm inside or if we'd like to be able to let our dog out by himself instead of standing and waiting for him. We decided we'd rather let him out by himself. Plus, this house is 50 minutes from the city but only about 5 from my husband's work so that'll be really nice for him everyday.
Now we just have to wait either for me to get paid or for us to get the moving bonus to reserve the house if it's still available.
@dolphi99: I might be asking you (probably will be) about things to do or see while we're up there since his job will move him every two years on average and we want to experience every place we go as much as possible.
@mandb122: No problem! I'm always willing to help out and give you guys ideas!
@dolphi99: I'll answer your question from the other thread in here so I don't thread jack.
We're moving about fifty minutes northwest of Minneapolis.
@mandb122: That's nice! then your close enough to minneapolis to enjoy the city without too much travel!
omg I know exactly how you feel! I've blogged on this some because it to me is such a big issue. Others seem to think its no big deal. I find it very stressful moving but not knowing the area or the prices or location of things. We're moving to Richmond, VA in 3 weeks. It has been planned for 11 months though so I've researched the heck out of it as much as I could. Padmapper is my best friend these days. Its the best since google maps took off their housing search. good luck!
If you need any input on towns in the suburbs, travel time, traffic impact, school districts or anything, I would be happy to help out! I grew up about 30 minutes NW of Minneapolis and live there now :)
@chancehere: We looked about 30 minutes NW at some townhomes but decided an actual house fit us better. We are looking at the Big Lake/Monticello areas if that helps. We decided we'd be able to get a nicer house closer to his work by going just a little further out.
@Rgeddy: I have done so much research in the past week I feel like I'm going crazy! We've researched things to do, places to go, places to eat, where to live, everything! And we're moving in two weeks or so, so it'll be around the same time as you!
@mandb122: that's nearish one of our big outlet malls. Good luck with the move, and let me know if you want to run any of your 'things to do' past a local!

We're moving up to Minnesota in about two and a half weeks so we need some place to rent. I'm about to pull my hair out. It's either too expensive, too small, too far from work, too far from the bigger cities, or not available until a week or two after we're supposed to get there. It's even more frustrating not being able to view the properties ahead of time. I just needed to vent a little although I'll be happier when I actually find a place for us!
