That seriously sucks.
Its not your doctor's fault that he/she's sick...but you're right...they should have called earlier!
OMG!!! Is there an after hours number or a doc that the office's answering service can page for you? That's ridiculous!
Im so sorry that really sucks and you have every right to be pissed, but you also dont want a sick surgeon operating on you. unfortunately many surgeons think they are god (or better) and dont like to cancel surgery unless they are Dying, your doc prob held out till last min hoping he/she would be able to pull through. Hope you get an answers soon so you can eat!

Your right...it would have been nice to talk to someone and not just get a message, but I would try to look at the bright side and at least your didn't show up there all prepared for surgery and a complete stanger of a Dr. comes to see you in pre-op! I would freak at that point.

also I dont know if anyone on here has had H1N1 but I know a few ER docs who had it and really thought they were dying, it is pretty miserable. These docs actually went into the ER, and it takes a lot to get an ER doc to go to the ER for anything!
Oh I do not want him operating on me...but I'd at least like to know if someone else can do it! Or if it's now going to be on Monday or what. I think if you call and cancel someone's surgery, the person in charge of rescheduling it (this Mary lady) should give you a # you can call her at. Especially since she called right at the end of the day, then left the office.
The after-hours receptionist told me to email Mary.
Oh, and now my mom is in town the weekend DH comes home from the military. Romantic homecoming. More like mood killer.

@msDecember - I have it right now! I don't feel like I'm dying -but I sure felt that way yesterday. I just feel pretty awful today.
Common ettiquite would lead me to believe that they should have called you prior to the end of day. That sucks. I'd be all over the phone trying to get someone.

well you really don't want a doc with H1N1 operating on you! So be glad that they actually cancelled! I know many people around here at the institution I'm working at that have come to work with H1N1. Doctors are very hardworking people so I'd be happy if I were you that he used proper judgement and cancelled his workday.
And see if you can call the hospital still and ask what will happen next.
Awwww man...that sucks. Look on the bright side though...you get to eat!! It takes about a week to get over the flu so can your mom go home and you can make arrangements for her to come back when surgery is rescheduled??
Yeah, I'm glad he had the common sense to not come in. But I can't seem to get ahold of anyone.
I flew my mom in. The tickets were over $500. She took off work. It's not really going to be feasible to bring her back in.
This means I can't have surgery until like, early December. I had so many plans that I worked around this week =(.
Man that double sucks =( If you are comfortable having another Dr. do the surgery maybe you can have it done soon. I hope it works out.
Ok the lady just called me. She's kind of a B on the phone. I'm sure she's not happy after dealing with annoyed patients all day.
She said nobody would operate on me tomorrow this last minute because I'm not their patient.
She said we could do it tomorrow if he feels better but I said "no, i don't want to play that game".
We're looking at Monday or Tuesday next week OR middle of December. I told her I can't do that because I'm a grad student AND i work full time and that's finals.
Cross your fingers for Monday, ladies! Monday at 7am!

I hope Monday works out! Can your mom's tickets be changed so she can stay longer?
Also, did it end up working out to convince her to stay in her own room?
Ugh, that's got to be infuriating! They should realize that calling at the end of the work day is probably not the best time to call to cancel a surgery! You have every right to be angry.
I'm sorry I don't have any advice as to what you should do. Call tomorrow first thing and complain?
:( Now if I were you I would still take the day off and go shopping with mom....
Oh, EJS, that's AWFUL! I'm so sorry they pushed off calling you until the last minute! Hopefully Monday works out! Crossing my fingers, toes, and anything else capable of being crossed for you now!
Aw thanks ladies. I knew a mini vent would make me feel better. I hope the doc feels better soon. Since he's been sick all week, he should be ok come monday. apparently my other option is mid-december. um, no, not when you work full time plus grad school finals.
i wish i could take the day off to spend with mom but i don't have enough sick or vacay days as it is.

I just got a phone call. "hi sorry we're cancelling your surgery tomorrow b/c your doctor has swine flu. call to reschedule"
I flew my mom in town to take care of me. I've already taken the time off work. They called me at the END of the day and then just left the office. I can't get ahold of anyone and I'm stuck here. With my mom. And I don't know when my surgery will be now.
This is ridiculous. What about a little bit of notice? What about a phone call so I can talk to someone tonight? You can't just call, say "hey sorry" and then be like, "call back in the morning". Do i go to work now? What if another doctor can do it? I can't eat if so.
