Ok Bees, here's the deal. I REFUSE to have flowers at my wedding. While I love flowers I've never had a love affair with wedding flowers and, to be honest, I'm too friggin' cheap to have flowers. So flowers as decor are out of the question completely. My dream (until I started researching it) was to have a completely feathery wedding. Not feather boa but black and cream/white ostrich plumes. From my bouquet to the centerpieces to what the flower girl would drop down the aisle (I guess you'd call her a feather girl. ha. sorry) Well, feathers apparently, are in huge demand. Who knew? Not I. *sigh* So I was just going to suck it up and pay the $200-$400 for the plumes, I had planned on DIYing everything so I went to Hobby Lobby and bought out what they had. The centerpieces came out WONDERFULLY (pic below) but the bouquet has been horrible and gone through multiple changes. So as I was perusing wedding blogs and the Flickr pool for Off Beat Bride and came across the beauties. I'm Stuck on Unconventional Bouquets! : wedding 6a00e54fccb6d2883401157050fa45970b 800wi

Yeah, pinwheel bouquets. So now I'm stuck. I LOVE the idea of feathers and I am getting married at the zoo and it would fit. But they are so expensive. And I am a total DIY bride, I've DIY'ed tons of stuff, and the pinwheels I can either do it myself OR I could get them for pretty cheap online. Way cheaper than feathers. I think I've made up my mind, but I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thanks!

WOW LOL that's the first time I've seen pinwheels in place of bouquets, and I think it's the most adorable funny idea ever!  If you have B&W feathers elsewhere in your wedding decor already, you should probably stick to feather bouquets for consistency.  Otherwise by all means go for the pinwheels!  You'll save money and have the most unique wedding on the block.

I haven't invested in the feathers, just the few I bought from hobby lobby, so right now, the wedding is still an open slate and 5 months away.

I think feathers would be fun.  I like the soft movement they have.  Depends on your overall look, though.

I love the pinwheels, hands down.

Something about the feathers doesn't seem right to me... but maybe I am too traditional!

the pinwheels are adorable!  are you having your ceremony outside?  It would be cute if you have a slight breeze and the pinwheels were spinning.  i'm in the same boat--the NO spending hundreds on flowers boat. i'm thinking of having my girls carry antique novels (a combo of my and FIs favorites) maybe with a single flower tucked in the pages and a ribbon? still brainstorming...

@Brightwings~I LOVE the book idea...very cute and original. My wedding is outdoors for the most part (reception is under a big tent)

@sctigergirl81~I've seen that site, Thanks! Since I need just at or around 20 tables that brings cost without shipping to $800, and in her description she says that only 20 feather drabs were in the kit but 40 were used in the pictures. That means I'd have to buy more feathers.

I love the pinwheels! I almost did them as centerpieces :) Ended up not doing them since it didn't go with the venue at all... But I still love the idea of using pinwheels in a wedding!

I dont' know.  I'm just not in love with the black and white feathers and the yellow/white theme.  It just doesn't flow for me or something.  I do like the pinwheels, a lot actually, but it would need to go with the overall theme for your wedding.  Something casual, kind of laid back.......I think the pinwheels would be super cute.

I think the pinwheels are fun and whimsical looking, whereas the feathers a little more elegant/sophisticated.  That being said, I vote for the pinwheels--there are so many fun and creative things you can do with them.

Have you thought about adding feathers to the back of the pinwheels or mixing the two in the ceterpiece?  They could be very unique.

I like both ideas very much but voted for the feathers because I think they're so darn elegant!

But you can def have some fun w/the pinwheels at the reception!

I'm having a non-traditional bouquet too...am having a seashell bouquet and I love it!  The groomsmen are having seashell bouts, and my bridesmaids are having flower bouquets with seashells mixed in the bouquets peeking out!

I love the colors of the pinwheels.  I would either go with those, or if you do feathers, I would rethink the black/white.  Its a little harsh looking for such a soft medium, you know?

It really depends on the look you're going for. To me, the feathers are chic and more sophisticated, but the pinwheels are fun and whimsical. Perhaps to account for the lack of feathers, you could mix in some silk flowers or something else to make the bouquets look a bit fuller? I love both of the images below, but I think the all-black is a little somber, but you could do black and white cala lilies with the black and white feathers you already have. And I love the pearls in the pink-ish bouqet.

Or maybe in sticking with the zoo-theme, go with cones of cotton candy! Just kidding, they would melt pretty quickly into a sticky mess, but could make for some totally cute photos!

Do you have a tutorial?! I've made a few out of just plain construction paper because that's all I have in the house, but I'm pretty pleased with how they've turned out! I've just been hot gluing them at the center and covering up the glue with a button...how are you attaching it?

@Anchors: below is a tutorial that i sent to another bee earlier this week.  i attached the ones you see with crappy floral wire, but i am working on a way to get the wire through button holes so i can put cute buttons in the middle.  good luck!

    ---

i am still working on perfecting the DIY pinwheels, but i can show you a tutorial on youtube that i used to make them. i've found that starting with a 6-inch by 6-inch square makes them the best size. i recommend scrapbooking paper that is double-sided. otherwise, you can take two scrapbook pages and glue them together so there are designs on each side. (that's what i did, using scrapbooking adhesive!)

the tutorial below will help you get the gist of how to make them, but obviously you don't want to use pencils for the stems. i recommend small dowel rods from the craft store, which you can either paint or cover in ribbon of a pretty color. also, i'm working on finding pretty pushpins to use in the center to hold it together.

    here is the tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LnEeOGgxXeU

there is also a decent illustration here: http://www.leslietryon.com/3dcolorcutout/makepinw/makepinwheel.html

good luck! definitely send me pictures of your DIY progress!
