Finally after about 6 weeks of looking, I am happy to report that we have found THE RING !!
The search was becoming quite disheartening, as I had seen what I wanted while we were on vacation in the USA… (NO Solitaire for me… I did that the first time round).
BUT I just couldn’t find what I’d seen in the USA up here in Canada (wider bands with a multitude of sparkle) … blame it on the fact that we have a much smaller population, so there are less choices (USA has 10x the amount of people as Canada).
Sadly though making a BIG Purchase in the USA and bringing it back to Canada can be quite expensive once you take into account Duties & Taxes… add on oh, aprox 25% for that (OUCH… so although our two Dollars are pretty much at Par right now… $ 5000 becomes $ 6250 after Duties & Taxes)
BUT my SO had said, that if we didn’t find something soon… to heck with the inconveniences, we’d just head south of the border, and buy what I was looking for, and pay the difference
Thankfully we won’t have to do that !
Saturday, we were out enjoying the good weather, and ended up in a smaller city about 2 Hours away.
I think my SO was looking forward to a beer on a patio overlooking the gorgeous waterfront, but it had occurred to me enroute, that there would be a few long-standing family-run Jewellery Stores to check out (have given up on chain stores… as they all have the same merchandise). I promised him, “oh maybe 30 minutes in each… and they are all relatively close together… and then we can go get a beer”
Never expecting, honestly to find anything… but a Girl has to look.
The first Jewellery Store we walked into was having a “trunk sale”… and prices had been reduced for that event. I wasn’t that optimistic as I looked thru the display cases, because sooo much of the merchandise was very very high end.
Then I came upon a case that had several rings in the shape I was looking for… wide bands with a multitude of diamonds (cocktail ring style, for lack of a better term). I just had to try them on.
Lol, it was great fun… because here I was in a unique situation… a variety of rings that might be THE ONE.
The Sales Guy was great, lol, at one point I think I had one on each finger of my hand, so I could visually compare them, and eliminate those that weren’t “doing it” for me
We were down to two…
One was a white gold ring with 3 centre princess rounds on the band (.30 / .50 / .30), then arced either side with a row of round diamonds that continued down either side of the shank. The ring fit perfectly and was ready to go… I could have taken it home that very minute !!
The other, was a wider white gold band, with 1 feature diamond (although this ring was JUST the setting, so the centre stone that I was trying on was a Cz) framed by a centre row of baguettes and then a row of rounds on each side of that, and on down the shank.
This ring was stunning, and incredibly comfortable… BUT it was also a lot more expensive, as we’d have to purchase a diamond to go with the setting… something in the .50 to 1.00 carat range (the Cz that was “place holding” was illustrating what a 1 Carat Diamond would look like)
I was highly uncomfortable, because although I get to choose the ring, it really is SO who has to be able to a pay for / afford it.
The Sales Guy, asked me the Question “So is this the ring?” (lol made me think of the saying they have on *Say YES to the Dress*)… and still having both rings on my hand, on side by side fingers, admiring their beauty… all I could think about was the huge cost of the second one in that we’d have to ADD a SIGNIFICANT Diamond to it.
Then Hubby-to-be said the magical words (you have to remember here, he’s seen my pain in looking thru 10s of Jewellery Stores these last 6 weeks as I’ve been continually disappointed, while all the while HOPING & PRAYING that I’d find “something” that would call out to me “Take me home… take me home… I know you LOVE me… take me home”)
“Hon, you look so happy, and I want you to be happy, I can tell one of these is the ring… you will wear it the rest of your life, so lets be sure we get the right one… I want to make you happy”
Gosh, I LOVE my guy… he is an AMAZING Man, and it only took me 40+ Years to find him !!
Lol… so with that… we moved onto looking at LOOSE DIAMONDs *Wink*
Oh my gosh… I was overwhelmed, we were way out of our league here… thank goodness I had read up on-line about loose diamonds, and had learned much from my time here on WBee.
All along we had said, that the feature diamond for “our ring” would be in the .50 to .75 range… I just couldn’t see myself with a 1.00 carat centre stone… just tooo big for me.
The Diamond Rep, said that with the size of the setting, that something in the .75 range would look best… he suggested a .80 Good Cut – SI1 Clarity – with F Colour. So there we were peering thru a Jewellers Loupe at this incredible piece of “icy frosting”…
It glittered like all get out… and look as I might, I really couldn’t see much “wrong” with it. My SO spent even more time with the Loupe than I did. In the end we agreed, gorgeous rock.
Then it was time for me to go “browsing”… as I knew my SO wanted to negotiate a bit more with the Sales Guy (and the Diamond Merchant)… I cruised around the stores many jewellery cases truly on a natural high… I was finally getting MY RING
Hubby-to-be must have done a good job (in his role) because the next thing I knew he was signing the paperwork… and the Sales Guy was telling us it will be ready in about 2 weeks.
We are very happy that we happened upon the trunk sale (got the setting for half-price, and saved on the loose diamond as well), and because it is a privately owned Jewellery Store we’ll be getting great customer service / care (cleanings, inspections, upgrade option, etc). They even advised us on Jewellery Insurance.
Now I just have to wait 2 more weeks till I can see “her” again.
Sorry folks, no ring porn… I was just tooo excited to take pictures
Lol, all the way home I had this incredible HUGE SMILE on my face, and once in awhile as SO was driving he’d glance over to look at me… and he’d totally crack up that I was soooo visibly happy
Ain’t LOVE grand ?
