I would say the Delaware beaches - dont let it fool you - they are AMAZING! They have nice sand (no rocks like up north), very family friendly, lots of things to do and not far from Baltimore/Philly/DC/Annapolis. Bethany and Rehoboth are my favorite - Dewey is a little more party-oriented. I also love the Outer Banks but they are a lot more removed from the mainland!
Well, if you want a great "beach life" aka sun and better weather, I wouldn't rec. anything North of Virginia Beach. That's where I'm at and I LOVE IT! It's a city, great beaches, great weather most the time (this winter was weird but we missed all but 1 snow storm), and the OBX are only like 45 min - 2+ hrs away depending on what part you want to go to.
clearwater beach! usually we get the beach all year round... this year has had a colder winter.
I agree that nothing north of VA beach is going to get you a really warm sunny beach experience. I love Bethany and the Delaware beaches, but they occupy a different sort of vacation in my mind because you can't really lay out in a bikini and enjoy the sun beating down on you and then refresh yourself with a dip in the water. It's too cold most of the time.
My family loves going to the Outer Banks, our favorite is Emerald Isle there, in NC. It's a lot less crowded than the rest of the Outer Banks.
If I were going to honeymoon at an east coast beach, though, I would have to go somewhere on Florida's Gulf coast. Soft white sand beaches and clear green water, so beautiful. I enjoyed North Captiva with a bunch of friends one spring break in college, a tiny island accessible only by ferry where you get around on golf carts. That was awesome.
To choose one beach town to live in, though, I think it depends whether you like a big city or a sleepy town. Virginia Beach is a huge sprawling place with lots going on, but maybe something like Savannah is more your style.
Moving to a beach is a whole different story than vacationing at one! Alot of the beaches listed here have relatively little in the way of year-round employment.
Captiva and Sanibel Islands are beautiful!! Did you eat the Mucky Duck??

My SO and I really like the beach and plan on moving to one, we just don't know which one! I understand we'd have to visit first but I was wondering, in your opinion, what is the best beach on the east coast?
