@Londongurl:  ohhhh it matters. lol. if you use a really inappropriate song for any part of your wedding, people will notice, and will chuckle. it’ll happen.

a wedding i went to last year used a really inappropriate Rihanna song for the recessional, and i was like, this is ridiculous. lol

we were careful not to use anything inappropriate for any of our music. its all contemporary indie-type stuff, but all the lyrics make sense for love/marriage/commitment, etc.

@TwoStatesBride:  +1

It’s odd but who am I to judge. I mean I am sure people won’t like the song we chose for our first dance. It isn’t inappropriate or anything but I feel like whatever floats your boat. Also, people so many people don’t listen to lyrics and only focus on the melody…which is sad but again, whatever floats their boat.

I always listen to lyrics. Always. So I would notice and be like, “uhhh…”

I was at a wedding once where they played Crazy Bitch – Buckcheery, Lips of an Angel – Finger Eleven, and another really inappropriate song that I can’t remember the name of right now.  I noticed and thought it was really really weird.

FH and I have purposfully picked a first dance song that doesn’t have breakups or affairs mentioned, my processional is an inappropriate song for a wedding but I’m walking to the Vitamin String Quartet version and I’m willing to be that no one will recognize it (and most people probably don’t know the song anyways) but it’s an important song to FH and I so that’s what we decided to do to incorporate it.

I have trouble with this because there is virtually no overlap between songs I like and songs with good lyrics for a first dance.  Originally, I though that I’d found a great first dance song and then I realized the lyrics were about a guy who fantasized about being in a relationship with a girl, and she didn’t even know who he was.  So, that idea got scrapped.

After a while, I just gave up on having 100% appropriate lyrics and decided on “Days to Come” by Bonobo, which is one of our favorite songs and artists.  The subject seems optimistic at least, and honestly you can’t hear what the singer is saying for most of the song so I doubt anybody will pay attention.  Close enough 🙂

@bleusteel: I LOVE Bonobo!

To the OP: Unless it’s blatantly offensive, I’m the kind of person who usually just pays attention to the vibe of the song as a whole.

I’m terrible at picking up lyrics anyway (unlike my brother, who can accurately sing the song after listening to it once). I’m the person who makes up words and substitute them for lyrics that I don’t quite understand, and gets surprised when I find out what they really say.

Lyrics are very important to FI and I! There’s a super cheesy upbeat love song from the 70s that isn’t super popular, and that I started singing to FI a long time ago, so we’ll be using that 🙂

One song that was used as a first dance song a lot when it came out was “Every Step You Take” by The Police which I think is hilarious because it’s about a stalker not a lover. 😛

@MsGinkgo:  lips of an angel is by hinder I thought? either way, that song is just…. I still love it but it’s definitely not for a wedding.

OP I would notice but I would imagine that my first thought (no matter what song it was) wouild be “well it must have some kind of significance to the couple.

@stardustintheeyes:  you’re totally right, not sure why I said Finger Eleven, maybe they did the other song that I can’t think of right now.

@MsGinkgo:  finger eleven is a good band though 🙂 Im a weirdo and when I think of songs I picture the album art that comes up when it plays on itunes. I immediately pictured the girl in the red bra when I thought of lips of an angel and I know that’s hinder’s cover art lol.
