I think it's random AND inappropriate and - well, in the spirit of honesty makes me say 'gak!' Let me guess - HE picked it out? That would be a typically random dude moment to pick out a song wihtout thinking at all about the meaning!
But I am dying to know...did he pick it out, or did she...
I don't think it's inappropriate...just maybe backwards. I could see a father dancing with his daughter to that song cause it's sweet. But I wouldn't think a groom's mother would be his "girl". Men don't often see their mothers as anything other than women and moms...not GIRLS. And if the MOG picked it, it's even more awkward...cause she wants to be seen as his girl...instead of maybe the bride? Yeah, that's awkward.
The innuendo in that song makes it VERY creepy as a MOG/Groom dance song. Seriously very Oedipus creepy.
If I were a wedding guest, and that song was played while the mother and son danced, I would be uncomfortable the ENTIRE time.
Wow...I voted inappropriate. I wouldn't know what to think if this was the mother/son dance...did he pick it out or she?
oops... I meant to click yes! Sorry- didn't read the question carefully enough! But yes, I think it is inappropriate and would be awkward for everyone watching!
I've got sunshine on a cloudy day.
When it's cold outside I've got the month of May.
I guess you'd say
What can make me feel this way?
My girl (my girl, my girl)
Talkin' 'bout my girl (my girl).
I've got so much honey the bees envy me.
I've got a sweeter song than the birds in the trees.
I guess you'd say
What can make me feel this way?
My girl (my girl, my girl)
Talkin' 'bout my girl (my girl).
Hey hey hey
Hey hey hey
Ooooh.
I don't need no money, fortune, or fame.
I've got all the riches baby one man can claim.
I guess you'd say
What can make me feel this way?
My girl (my girl, my girl)
Talkin' 'bout my girl (my girl).
I've got sunshine on a cloudy day
with my girl.
I've even got the month of May
with my girl (fade)
Not sure that anything about the lyrics is SPECIFICALLY creepy (not like, er, Brown Eyed Girl) but everybody knows it's a lovesick teenager type song, not a mother/son song!!
I vote no.
I think it might be ok for dad/daughter, but not for son/mom
You're getting off easy - my MIL suggested songs that implied grief, like that michael buble "come home" song, or whatever it was. He's been away from home for over 10 years, geeeeez.
I don't know if the word "inappropriate" is the right one to use. I certainly think it's weird and would feel weird if my fiance was going to dance with his mom to that song at our wedding.
Although it's funny, I've heard of people using that song for the father/daughter dance and people couldn't say enough good things about it. Guess that one doesn't work for both. haha
There have been people who ask about that song, kingcake. I remember big debates on it, haha.
I actually don't have a problem with this song...I feel like if it's important to your FI or your FMIL to dance to this song then I'd let them do it. It's a short song and it's sweet, I'd be really surprised if at the end of the day gave the song a second thought.
I agree with rachelrobin and sillysil i want to know who picked it him or her. and i voted yes it is inappropriate
I don't think it's inappropriate, but since I've always considered the parent/child songs to be more of a "from parent to child" sentiment, I think it would make more sense as the father/daughter (daddy's little girl sort of thing).
In general, I think it's a cute upbeat song, and I agree with those that pointed out - no one else will ever care as much as you do. I truly can not remember a SINGLE parent/child OR couple's first dance song. I don't even remember what song I walked into as the MOH at my best friend's wedding 9 months ago.
I find it inappropriate. But I remember reading on these forums a few days ago that someone else used I Will Always Love You as a mother/son dance song. I found that one even MORE inappropriate.
Does no one listen to the lyrics before choosing songs?
kinda weird...
but at least she's not picking some sappy "my baby boy is leaving me boo hoo hoo" songs. Like suggested above. lol
ack!
I wanted FI to pick Simple Man or something similar.. now i dont think hes doing a dance at all.
That's the song she picked right? Because that is WAY inappropriate!!
I don't really think it's inappropriate in any way, just the connotations don't imply a parent/child relationship.
I think "My Girl" is more of a Father/Daughter song... seems a little odd for a Mother/Son dance.
I didn't vote b/c honestly I can't decide. I don't necessarily think it's inappropriate but it is kind of weird. I think those are sentiments that your FIwould have about you, not his mom. I think the problem is that we are thinking about the FI "singing" the song to his mom when really these are her feelings abt him.
It's weird. But I think it's hard to find slow-dance songs for the parent-child dances. Most slow-dance songs have a romantic and/or sexual connotation.
I tend to think the whole concept is weird... but I won't get into that. I'll probably end up doing it anyway :)
@Mrs. Louboutin:
